SE 106: SEMINAR ON THE ARTS OF TEACHING SCIENCE

TEAM – BASED
LEARNING (TBL)
EDMAR A. MALABRIGA JR.
MAED – SCIENCE EDUCATION I
TEAM – It is a pedagogical
BASED strategy that engages
LEARNING student knowledge
through individual
testing and group
collaboration.
This process motivate students by
holding them accountable to
themselves and one another, while
introducing them to a variety of thought
processes devoted to a single problem.
TEAM-BASED
LEARNING
COLLABORATIVE
PROCEDURE
PRE-CLASS PREPARATION
Students
complete pre-
class readings
and/ or other
assignments.
Students complete an
Individual Readiness
iRAT Assurance Test (iRAT) to
measure what they’ve learned
from their pre-class
assignments
Students take a short
multiple choice format using
questions that fall on the
lower level of Bloom’s
Taxonomy.
The goal of this assessment
is to hold students
accountable for the material.
Students join their team and

tRAT complete a Team Readiness

Assurance Test (tRAT) using
Immediate Feedback
Assessment (IF-AT) form
When the team scratches off
the correct answer, they will
see a star; otherwise, they
continue discussing until they
have the right answer.
Designing conventional min-
quizzes can also be used
instead
APPEALS
Students next
have the chance
to appeal any
questions they
answered
incorrectly.
CLARIFICATION SESSION
The instructor
provides a mini-
lecture on areas
where the
students are
having trouble.
FOCUSED
APPLICATION Students engage
TASK with activities that
apply and extend
knowledge gained
Through teamwork
and knowledge,
benefits of TBL can
extend beyond the
classroom
RECOMMENDATIONS
BUILD Effective teams
EFFECTIVE typically include a
TEAMS wide range of
personalities, beliefs,
and backgrounds,
thereby joining peers
with different
characteristics and
viewpoint.
USE
When possible, teams
SMALL of 4-6 students are
TEAMS small enough to
encourage individual
contribution without
minimizing or
overpopulating
diversity of
perspectives.
Design iRAT activities
SYNCHRONIZE so that all teams work
TEAMS on the same problem,
need to make a specific
choice, and report their
choices simultaneously
Groups can hear the
reasoning of other
teams on the same
topic
Integrate mid- and
HOLD end-peer evaluations of
ASSESSMENTS teammates into TBL
These can keep
students motivated and
accountable by
supplying anonymous
feedback and
encouraging the
functioning of the team.
 Students develop teamwork,
critical thinking & problem-
PROS solving skills.
 Students learn about the value of
teamwork.
 Students learn about their
strengths and weaknesses as
team members.
 TBL’s incentive structure
encourages student engagement.
 TBL is fun!
