Acknowledgements
I dedicate this work to my mother and father, Lois and Ainea, and to all my sisters Naututu, Naliaka,
Nelima, Nanyolo and Nafu. I thank the School of Architecture at Carnegie Mellon for the opportunity and
support through this process. In particular, I thank Prof Ramesh Krishnamurti for his guidance and for chairing
my thesis committee. I also thank the other members of the committee Dr John Haymaker, Prof Daniel
Cardoso Llach and Prof Aarti Singh. I particularly thank John Haymaker for being a great educator and for
mentoring me both as a student and as a co-worker. In addition, I thank Susan Gushe AIBC and Perkins&Will
Architects as a whole, for their support through the process.

I acknowledge and credit the contributions of all my research colleagues from the Perkins&Will Design
Process Lab. In particular Dr Cheney Chen, Dr Marcelo Bernal, Tyrone Marshall AIA and Dr Mohamed Imam
have all contributed to the data, the reference projects and the simulation processes discoursed upon in this
work.

I would also like to mention the great teachers that have provided guidance over the years. Dr John
Haymaker, Prof Harry Lewis, Prof Harvey Brown, Patrick Mwaniki, Raphael Ghortaza, Silvano Borusso and the
women from my primary school days: Nzoi, Sisenda, Njaga, Pobunderwalla, Chakava, Walobwa and Kosgei.
