Guide:
PHRASES THAT FUNCTION AS NOUNS
There are different types of PHRASES that function as NOUNS, that is to say, they
can function as SUBJECT, DIRECT OBJECT, INDIRECT OBJECT, OBJECT OF THE
PREPOSITION, SUBJECT COMPLEMENT or APPOSITIVES in a sentence.

I.- Noun phrases


A.- Identify the noun phrases in the following sentences and indicate their functions.
1.- One of my friends has gone to France. SUBJECT

2.- The poor man wanted to pay back every penny he owed. SUBJECT - DIRECT OBJECT

3.- She wrote an interesting story. DIRECT OBJECT

4. I will never do such a thing. DIRECT OBJECT

5. [The girl [in the white shirt]] won the competition. SUBJECT - DIRECT OBJECT

B.- Complete the following sentences by supplying suitable noun phrases.


1. I want ______

II Appositive phrases
Identify the appositive phrases in the following sentences and indicate their functions.

1.- The bookshelf, a large piece of furniture, was moved into the house first. NP modifier
2.- Gus, Eric's black cat, slowly crept up behind the kittens.
3.- Mr. Harrison, the principal at my school, wears a tie every day.
4.- Matthew’s special talent, bouncing on his head on the trampoline, gives him a unique
perspective on life.
5.- I like spaghetti, an Italian dish with noodles and sauce.
6.- Marcus, my sister's hamster, likes to run in a wheel.
7.- The play was brilliant and I enjoyed Mary, the best actress in our school.
III Gerund phrases
Identify the gerund phrases in the following sentences and indicate their functions.

IV Infinitive phrases
Identify the infinitive phrases in the following sentences and indicate their functions.

1.- His great ambition was to bring dinosaurs back to life. SUBJECT COMPLEMENT

2.- We need to visit the museum.

3.- To get good grades is my goal.

4.- His job was to tutor me in math.

5.- I want to eat pizza for dinner.

6.- My dream, to make it to the NBA, is what keeps me going.
