Role and Purposes After taking this subject, students are expected to be able do the following: (1) explain
Pay Model and forms of pay which can be offered by organization; (2) analyze factors
influencing internal alignment and external competitiveness of compensation in case
studies or papers on compensation; (3) analyze case studies or papers on different
benefits offered base on their understanding on the dynamics of benefits offered by
organization; and (4) analyze compensation packaged for special groups: professionals
and expatriates.
Compensation and benefits have always been an issue for organizations. The course
discussions will cover developing a right compensation and benefits packages for
employees, organization that can influence the employee behavior while also retain
its best people. Compensation can create competitive advantage for organization; but
on the other hand it can also make organization goes bankrupt as the packages
offered do not match with the organization strategy and its environmental contexts.
Thus, it is important to understand the aspects influencing compensation and how to
develop right compensation package for organization base on those aspects.

Teaching/Learning We are primarily using a combination of traditional lecturing approach and class
Methodology discussion as the method of teaching, with an emphasis on group debates. The
success of this subject is based on class participations in every session of regular class
meetings. The students are required to read lecturing materials before attending class

Individually, each student is required to participate actively in teaching and
learning:
1. Ask questions in accordance with the topic.
2. Prepare yourself to answer questions.
3. Discuss issues related to the topic.
To be eligible, students must read textbooks and other materials provided.
Attendance:
Minimum 80% of Total Lecture:
1. A maximum of 3 (three) times absents, for no reason.
2. Students who came 15 minutes after class begins are considered not
present

3. Prepare and present individual final paper from one of the topics below:
a. Compensation packages in Indonesia public sector with the agenda of
bureaucratic reform: the change, expected impacts, and evidence.
b. Compensation gap due to the practice of hijacking talents/executives.
c. The dynamics of minimum wage: the objectives, settlement, practice, and
implications (compare Indonesia with one or two countries).
d. Contrasting benefits options for core and peripheral employees.
e. Pay based on employee contribution: how far does it go?
f. Dynamics of competitiveness and equality for executive pay.
4. For the final paper, students are requested to conduct desk research from at least
two books and three most recent journal paper (2010 and forward) and field
research to capture the evidences from the practices.
5. Prepare the individual and final papers to meet the following criteria:
a. Paper length does not exceed 15 (fifteen) pages (multiple spacing (1.15
points); Times New Roman 12) by allocating at least 10 (ten) pages for
analysis, discussion, and alternative problem solutions;
b. Use references of at least two (two) books and 3 (three) most recent (2010
and forward) journal articles;
b. Refer writing style to the guidance from the University of Indonesia;
6. Grading is based on three aspects, namely quality of content, writing structure,
and physical appearance with grading ratio of 6:3:1.

In accordance to the disciplinary rules and code of ethics for students as indicated ont
the Guidebook of FEBUI, students are prohibited to conduct plagiarism, and will be
sanctioned/punished accordingly.
The sanctions/punishment are as follows:
First time offense, the minimum sanction is a Zero (0) grade for the
assignment or maximum an F
Second time offense, the grade for the course will be an F.
Third time offense, the student will be expelled from Department of
Management, FEBUI.
