REFLECTION PAPER ON SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL CURRICULUM

The Department of Education (DepEd) added two more years to the traditional 4

years of high school which is the Grades 11 and 12. One goal is to align ourselves with the

basic education systems found in most other countries. Senior High School also aims to better

prepare students for whatever career path they may choose after high school, academic or

otherwise. Incoming students can choose from any of 4 “tracks,” namely: academic, TVL or

technical-vocational-livelihood, sports, or arts and design. In the academic and TVL tracks,

students can choose among different “strands” of specialization.

A study by the Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS) showed that not

nearly enough schools were ready to provide the various tracks and strands upon the

implementation of Senior High School. Teachers, learners, and parents were also undecided

and unprepared of the said additional two years. Teachers were at a loss on which specific

subjects to teach in the tracks offered by their schools (Punongbayan, 2019).

In spite of these, the SHS program continues. And it is proven that justifies that it

helps learners to be equipped for the future. Learners develop academically and practically

through Senior High School curriculum.

Moreover, through Senior High School program, learners can be a fully developed

individual who can work while studying. There are realizations of theories. Learners are

trained, guided with their career paths, and are placed in the middle of the community

wherein they can experience real life experiences and real work experiences.
