Overview
Rizal also demonstrated his gift of discernment in other works as a distinct man with
extraordinary abilities and competencies in writing and other fields. He was a visionary who was

RIZAL’S MESSAGE TO FILIPINO WOMEN
Youth, according to Rizal, Is a flower-bed that is to bear rich fruit and must accumulate
wealth for its descendant. For this reason, he pointed out that it is the mothers who are responsible
for the present servitude of our compatriots, owing to the unlimited trustfulness of their loving
hearts, to their ardent desire to elevate their sons. Maturity is the fruit of infancy and the infant is
formed on the lap of its mother,
Moreover, Rizal was very certain as to the duties mothers should fulfill to their children:
02 Awaken and prepare the mind of the child for every good
and desirable idea

Furthermore, Rizal stressed the need for mothers to educate their children on the following values:
The Filipino mother has to be a noble wife. Also, she is responsible for rearing his children
in the service of the state. Additionally, Rizal argued that the Spartan women should serve as an
example for raising children for the service of the state. Apart from these characteristics, a woman
must set the standards of conduct for men around her. Specifically, there are three basic things
a wife must instill in the mind of her husband, namely:

Inasmuch as the partner of her husband’s heart and misfortune,
Rizal gave the following advices to a married women:
The Letter to the Young Women of Malolos did not only center on Rizal’s counsels to
Filipino wives. He directly advised the young men that in choosing their lifetime partner, they
should not consider physical beauty nor the sweetness disposition of a woman, but rather give
priority to firmness of character and lofty ideas. On the other hand, he counseled young women
not to surrender their womanhood to a weak and timid heart.
According to Rizal, there are three things that a young woman must look for a man she is
going to marry:

RIZAL’S REMINDERS ON EQUALITY, SELF-RESPECT and
04 TRUE SPIRT OF RELIGION
According to Kalaw (1932), the last part of Rizal’s letter focused on his reminders on
equality, self-respect and true spirit of religion. Wherein, Rizal pointed out the following points:
The tyranny of some is possible only through cowardice and negligence on the
01
part of others.
What makes one contemptible is lack of dignity and abject fear of one who holds
02
one in contempt.
He who loves his independence must first aid his fellowman, because he who
03
refuses protection to others will find himself without it.
Ignorance is servitude, because as a man thinks, so he is; a man who does not
04 think for himself and allows himself to be guided by the thought of another is like
a beast led by a halter.
Consider well what kind of religion they are teaching you. See whether it is the
05 will of God or according to the teaching of Christ that the poor be succored and
those who suffer alleviated.
All men are born equal, naked, without bonds. God did not create man to be a
06 slaver; nor did he endow him with intelligence to have him hood winked or adorn
him with reason to have him deceived by others.
If the Filipina will not change her mode of being, let her rear no more children, let
07 her merely give birth to them. She must cease to be the mistress of the home,
otherwise she will unconsciously betray husband, child, native land and all.
