HUMANISM

It came from the Latin word "humanistas"


which means "culture".

It is the tendency to emphasize man and his


status, importance, powers, achievements,
interest or authority.

RENAISSANCE

• It is a French word means "rebirth".

• It came out during the time when thinkers of the middle


ages considered the period as a dark time from which
the human spirit had to be awakened.
RENAISSANCE
• It was a period of great cultural and
technological changes.

• HUMANISTS believed that human beings


could be dramatically changed by
education.
RENAISSANCE HUMANISM
• Humanists wanted to focus their thoughts
not on the power of god but on the
capability of human person to acquire
something in life.
• They considered god as still the creator and
the supreme authority.
• They considered god's activity as less
immediate and more as a general control
than as day-to-day interference.
• The humanist of the renaissance created
schools in order to teach their ideas and
wrote books all about education .

• They sought to create a citizenry that were


capable to speak and write with
eloquence and clarity.
HUMANISM AS A PHILOSOPHY
OF EDUCATION

• This would consider the human person


as, by nature, self- developing
creature.
• The job of the educators would be to
provide the students with best learning
environment where students would be
able to obtain not only intellectual but
also moral, personal and individual
growth.

to free the learners from the demands that are
being imposed by the various authoritative
institutions of medieval period.
• Learners had lost a sense of freedom and their
learnings became too limited because of the
demands of the institution.
• Learners were prevented from exploring
knowledge that are outside those which
were being imposed to them.
HUMANISTIC EDUCATION
• During the modern period, it was distinguished between

Italian or Individual humanism

Northern or Social humanism

• It is characterized by freedom of thought, self-expression,


and creative activity.

• It aimed to develop individual personality through art,


culture, music, literature and architecture.
