WORKSHEET NO. 2

Direction: In your own words, state the meaning of “self” according to each of the following
philosophers.

What Socrates meant about self is that our one true self is our
SOCRATES soul. The soul is the intellectual and moral personality
of humans or the essence of the human person, which
means that a virtuous person is “the true self”.
Plato’s meaning of self is linked to what his mentor meant. The
true self is the “rational soul” he also defines the self as a
PLATO
Knower. Base on his concept of self, self is linked with
knowledge as it reflects the nature of a person.
St. Augustine’s definition is somewhat connected to Socrates’
ST. AUGUSTINE and Plato’s definition. The self is an immortal soul. Because the
self can’t live in this world without taking care of its body.
“The mind is the self” what Rene Descartes meant in this is that
the mind which thinking, doubting, and analyzing occur is what
RENE DESCARTES
makes us humans. He believes that our mind is superior to our
body, thus, it makes us human.
“The self is consciousness” what John Locke meant here is that
JOHN LOCKE the self is molded or developed by the person’s experience,
sense, or consciousness since we’re born.
“There is no self” David Hume believes that the self is just an
idea, impression, or illusion that came from our imagination.
DAVID HUME
This means that the self or a man continuously changes from
time to time.
“We construct the self” Kant also said that the “The Noumenal
Self” is the “true self”. It means that the self is a free agent who’s
IMMANUEL KANT
capable of deciding for himself without another person’s
permission.
“The self is Multilayered” Sigmund Freud believes that the self
has three levels of mind which are conscious, pre-conscious,
SIGMUND FREUD
and unconscious. The self is what we call conscious because we
are aware if there is something wrong with something we did.
“The self is the way people behave” He defines the self as a
collection of behavior. And he also believes that the mind and
GILBERT RYLE
body are connected in the sense because what the mind can
interpret can be seen through the person’s action.
“The self is the brain” Paul Churchland believes that if there is
PAUL CHURCHLAND no brain, there will be no self. Because the brain is an organ that
processes the understanding and recognizing abilities of one
person.
“The SELF is embodied subjectivity” he believes that all the
MAURICE PONTY knowledge came from the experiences of a person. That means
that the self is developed by gaining experience.

Direction: Assume that you are a philosopher, how would you perceive “self”?
You may create a diagram or any kind of illustration to further explain your personal
perspective or theory of self.

“SELF as a product of development”

Self is a person’s identity on which you can call their consciousness.

The Identity of a person will grow by going through development, which can also occur
environmentally. The environment that the person experienced will start to connect on their
life, which will help his mentally or physically attribute will gradually grow and his identity will
start to develop. The identity which has been developed by experiencing the environment is
what we call the “self”.
