While bullying has always been a problem encountered during childhood and adolescence, we all know it is
on the rise. When a child is intentionally and repeatedly mean to inother child, the cycle begins. Bullying occurs
on the playgrounds, at lunch in the cafeteria, in locker rooms, even over the phone. And now that so manyinitOren
have access to the latest technology, the problem has become even more prevalent.
Enter the newest room-cyber bullying-whereby children and teens deliberately use digital media to
disseminatb false, embarrassing, or lust ltain *ean ,.srrges or pictures about'one perion to others.
Cybubutlying can occur via text, email, Facebook, Twitter, or other sociai media outlets. The American Academy
of Pediakics calts cyberbutlying "the most common online risk for a[] teen.,,
Studies have shown that between 25 pefcent to 45 percent of teens report being bullied online. Many kids
10 report such keatment having occurred more than once. Cfberbullying is affecting alt agis, as even young children
often have access to technology and the lnternet.
Chitdren ol all ages need to understand that the lnternet is not a "safe" place, and that it is a public forum.
_
Even if you delete a message or photo, it actualty continues to exist in cyberspace. Also, many teens mistakenly
think they will not "get caught' if they bully someone online, or that such behavior is "not that big a deal."
15 All parents need to discuss lnternet safety and the problem of cyberbultying with thiir children. This is
especially important for tweens and teens, as they spend much of their time online. Just as kids must learn and
practice good rnanners in publie, they also need.to mind their manners online. lf a child would not say something
to another young person's face, then the same dig should not be emaited or texted. tt is really as simple as that.
This is what I call the "front door rule": Tell your child that if he/she writes an email or text, or posts something
2A derogatory about another person on Facebook, Twitter, lnstagram (or other sites), to think before they push
"send." lf they would not want to post the information on their front door for family members and all the neignOors
to see, they should stop, think and change-or forget about-the message. lt could hurt someone more than they
realize and could also be forwarded on to hundreds, thousands, even millions of others.

A common way of gaining knowledge is through experience, which relies on trial-and-error learning. One
of the authors is reminded of a time when he (51) .-
an Old Order Amish farmer while their two 5-year-

with the other and tap the turtle's beak with his index finger, jerking it away as the animal (52) in the __

the turile, he would be sorry. Suddenly, the boy (54) _
and dropped the turtle to the ground. As the
father retrieved a handkerchief from his pocket and attended to the young boy's bleeding finger, the man
looked into his son's eyes and said in German (55) into "Maybe the turtle has taught you what your
father could not." The author could not help but feel that his son, who stood in horror (56)

friend's bleeding finger, had also learned something from the experience.

An old adage (5i) _ , "Experience is the best teacher." lf our knowledge is , however,
then it is limited indeed, for experience is the best teacher only if we cannot also find other paths to
knowledge, Because experience is a very (59) _
of gaining knowledge, it is influenced by our social
and cultural backgrounds. (60) is punctuated by diversity as people of different racial, ethnic, gender,
and socioeconomic backgrounds not only experience vastly different things in life, but, more important, often
interpret similar experiences quite differently.
