What is a lobectomy?

A labectomy is the surgical removal of a section

(lobe) of your lung to treat non-small cell lung
cancer in its early stages.

When is it done ? Who can do this?

When you've non-small cell lung
cancer in it's early stages.
Why its done
Lobectomy surgery offers the
best chance of a cure for
people with early stage lung
cancer. The results of a
minimally invasive lobectomy
are better than a traditional
lobectomy.
How it is performed?
make an incision on the side
of your chest between your
ribs
place a thoracoscope (small
video camera) and surgical
instrument through the incision
Perform a wedge biopsy of the
lesion if you didn't get a diagnosis
pre operatively
Remove the specimen using a
specialized bag to pull the
tissue through one of the small
incisions

Lung abnormalities present at
birth
Damage to your lung from
infection or radiation
Tumors that have spread from
other sites in your body to your
lungs
Bleeding from lung damage
Check to be sure that they have
removed enough tissue around the
tumor to be sure they got it all (surgical
margins)
Sampel the lymph nodes in your chest to
evaluate for microscophic cancer spread
Check to make sure that nothing is
bleeding
Rinse out your chest cavity
Close your incisions
