Exercise for Water pollution

Question 1
Table Q3 shows a list of results from water sampling conducted at River Kerayong. Based on
the information given, calculate the Water Quality Index (WQI) and identify the status of the
river.
(CO2 – PO3) (C5) (10 Marks)
Table Q1: Results from sampling at River Kerayong

Dissolved Oxygen (in % saturation) 88

Suspended Solids (mg/l) 77

Ammoniacal Nitrogen (mg/l) 4

Chemical Oxygen Demand (mg/l) 85

Biochemical Oxygen Demand (mg/l) 21

Question 2
A water quality sampling was performed for River X. The laboratory results from water
quality analysis are as shown in Table 2. Calculate the Water Quality Index (WQI).
Determine the river classification and discuss its designated uses.

Question 3
The water quality study of Sungai way was undertaken by certified laboratory on 7 March 2008
from 9.30 am to 12pm. Table Q3 and Figure Q3 shows the water quality result and water
quality index of three sites. Analyse the water quality status of this river based on Water Quality
Index (WQI) and based on water quality parameters, discuss the impact of concentration for
dissolved oxygen and ammonia based on Table Q2b to the aquatic life.
