• In order: ROM, RAM, ROM, RAM.
• Storing the operating system on ROM might seem like a good idea, but if it were on
a ROM chip, then it could not be updated or edited with, for example, updates from
the software company or new drivers for input/output devices.

Question 5
a A backup involves duplicating the information stored on a computer so that, in the
event of a problem or loss of the original file, the backup copy can be used as a
replacement.
b The backup process will only take a short time because fewer files are being
copied. It also means that the space needed for these file copies is smaller than if
all files were copied.

c Sergeiy needs the latest versions of files copied in case the originals are lost or
deleted. He could also look at files as they were at a particular date in the past –
important if there seems to be some error in a past order and a customer’s account
needs examining.

e Sergeiy might consider the risk that this solution is protecting him from is too small.
f Sergeiy could take the backup onto a removable storage device such as a CD-
ROM, and then store it somewhere away from his office – at home maybe.

Access by bank staff will be restricted through passwords dependent on need-to-

Tip: There is an IF statement at step 13. Students do not necessarily need to
understand the formulae for this task; they will move onto more advanced
spreadsheet skills in Unit 6. However, if you do want to explain IF functions at this
point, you could.
