The Impact of Peer Pressure On Students’
Academic Achievement
Leonardo Bursztyn and Robert Jensen took two  groups  of 11th graders and offered them  free
SAT prep courses.  One group had to sign up publicly, in full view of peers, and the other group
signed up confidentially.  The experiment was conducted in both honours and non- honours
classes.  The authors write, “In non-honours classes, the signup rate was 11 percentage points
lower when deciding to sign up were public rather than private.”

To further isolate the impact of peer pressure, the authors studied a group of students enrolling
in both honours and non-honours classes, offering again a free SAT prep course. When offered
the course in a non-honours class, these students were 25 percentage points less likely to sign
up if the decision was public rather than private. But if they were offered the course in one of
their honours classes, they were 25 percentage points more likely to sign up when the decision
was public. Thus, students are highly responsive to whom their peers are and what the
prevailing norm is when they make decisions. They conclude: “Peer pressure appears to be a
powerful force affecting educational choices, and whether students undertake important
investments could improve academic performance or outcomes. In our case, in non- honours
classes, even very low-income students are willing to forgo free access to an SAT prep course
that could improve their educational and possibly later life outcomes, solely in order to avoid
having their peers know about it.”

Leonardo Bursztyn and Robert Jensen offered SAT prep courses to two groups of students:

you agree?

There is a school of thought that engaging in group work instead of ___________ (s___) learning
could have a positive impact on students’ ___________ (a___) performance. From my
perspective, studying ___________ (c___) via group exercises should be encouraged at school
because the offered benefits outweigh the disadvantages.

A clear advantage of ___________ (a___) a group activity is that this creates a platform for every
class member to form and freely exchange their ideas; therefore, their critical thinking skill
would be significantly ___________ (e___). To explain, through such ___________ (e___) to
different perspectives coming from the ___________ (p___), students would learn how to
evaluate the ideas based on their knowledge and experience. This process stimulates brain
activities, which subsequently could help them become an ___________ (a___) learner who is
eager to explore new concepts and viewpoints. Furthermore, participating in collaborative work
could be a great assistance in sharpening students’ other essential interpersonal skills, which
are hardly taught in textbooks. This is because despite the importance of academic abilities,
working on group work, or a group ___________ (a___) also involves different skills such as
communication and time management to help students work smoothly with other teammates.
For example, in the case of having a heated discussion among group members, it is more
___________ (p___) to have a student who knows how to negotiate and resolve conflicts.
