use and maintenance of Bull lines
1. Bull Lines:
Bull lines are important component of the
drilling rigs used for most critical operation of
raising and lowering of the mast and
‘substructure. These wire ropes are specially
made along with sockets (spelters) at ends
and designed specifically for a particular
type of mast and substructure. Failure and
wrong utilization of these ropes may lead to
catastrophe. Bull lines are also known as
mast raising / lifting lines in the field.
Note: Same standard operating procedures
will be applicable for the wire ropes used
separately for raising and lowering of sub
structure platforms.
2. Technical specification:
Bright (uncoated) basic grade, round strand,
preformed, steel wire rope, RHRL (Right
Hand Regular Lay), EIPS (Extra Improved
Plough Steel), IWRC (Independent wire
rope core) conforming to AP! STD - 9A of
2011 (latestissue).
For 1 1/8"Dia Bull lines: (Lifting Lines for
sub- structures of E-2000, E-1400, E-760
Sky Top Rigs and ARMCUE-1320.)
Construction 6x25 FW & classification 6X19.
For 1 3/4"Dia Bull lines: (Bull Lines for
E-760 Sky Top Rigs)
Construction 6x25 FW & classification 6X19.
For 2" Dia Bull Lines: (Bull Lines for E-2000
& E-1400 Sky Top Rigs, F-4900 & F-6100
and ARMCUE-1320)
Construction 6 x 49 SWS & classification
6x 36.
For 2 3/8" (60mm) Dia Bull Lines:
Bull Lines for E- 2000, E-1400 & E-760
ranham Rias. Bl 1500. BI 2000 and
EV-2000 Rias.)
Construction 6 x 49 SWS & classification
6x 36.
For 2 3/4" Dia Bull Lines: (Bull Lines for
E-3000 Rig)
Construction 6 x 49 SWS & classification
6x 36.
3. Important aspects with
regard to Bull lines:
Bull lines of one rig should never be
used on another rig having different
specification.
ii. Bull lines should be inspected
periodically and maintained in a well
lubricated condition. The field lubricant
should be compatible with original
lubricant as recommended by
manufacturer. The objective of the rope
lubricant is to reduce internal friction
and prevent corrosion.
iii, Bull lines should never be used for
earthings of electrical welding circuit.
iv. Bull lines should be protected from
corrosive mud system, so while not invie

use the coiled portion of Bull lines
should be wrapped in water proof
material in hanging position after
raising mast.
New and unused Bull lines should be
wrapped in water proof material &
‘stored in covered shed to protectit from
‘exposure to sun & rain. Storage of Bull
lines should be free from dust, steam,
chemicals fumes or any other corrosive
agentand environment.
Each and every rig should have
one set of standby Bulllines.
Bull lines from reputed manufacturer
only should be used.
Test report of Bull ines, spelter socket
& total assembly should be asked atthe
time of purchase and preserved till it's
discard.
NDT of sockets of the Bull lines should
be carried out during every rig building
or at least once in a year and maintain
proper record.
Bull lines should be checked for any
physical damage like cracks, kinks,
crushing, rusting, worn out etc. before
any raising/lowering of mast/sub
structure.
Make sure that guides and sheaves
(pulleys) turn freely as the wire rope
moves. All pulleys must be greased
before & after use and once in every
quarter duringidle period.
Bull lines should be protected from
abrasion caused by normal movement
created during operations. Avoid direct
contact of Bull lines with floor. It must be
hanged with the mast at the specified
position after raising of mast. While
tying Bull lines loop on the mast,
number of tie points must be at least
three to avoid developing sharp bendat
the tie point. Further use of rubber
protectors/ support at tying/hanging
points may be considered,
xiii. Avoid formation of loops, kinks and any
type of distortion. Care should be taken
while transporting the Bull lines to
avoid any damage.
xiv. Bull lines always must be replaced in
complete set.
xv, Discarded Bull lines must never be
reused for raising and lowering of mast
& sub structure unless otherwise
certified by authorized person for its re-
use.
4. Record keeping of Bull
Lines
Regular periodic inspections of the Bull ines
should be carried out and proper records
signed by an authorized person must be
maintained. The purpose of inspection is to
detect the progression of normal wire rope
wear as well as locating areas of damage or
abuse in the wire rope and determine
whether or not a wire rope may continue to
be safely used on that application. The
inspection should also include the condition
of sheaves (pulleys) with which the ropes
make contact.
A register containing all details of Bull lines
including details of number of raising/
lowering must be kept at the rig and
observations, if any during inspection of Bull
lines need to be recorded and signed by DIC
and Rig building in-charge. Record of Bull
lines including spelter socket should also
include purchase order number againstwhich it was purchased, name of
Manufacturer, date when putin use, date and
nature of inspection, date of lubrication etc.
5. Discard policy:
The principal factors, which may limit the life
of Bull lines, are wear & tear, corrosion, and
physical damage.
+ Wears function of the number of times
a mast or substructure is raised and
lowered,
+ Corrosion is related to time and
environmental conditions.
+ Physical damage bears no relation to
either wear or corrosion, and may occur
atany time.
Presence of broken wires, excessive wear,
corrosion, mechanical and other damages
due to heat, chemical reaction, over loading
etc. are the main criteria for discarding Bull
lines during use.
The following points are useful in
determining inspection and replacement
procedures.
i, Asa safe practice the Bull lines must be
replaced after three years or 6 times
raising and 6 times lowering of mast
whichever is earlier in coastal areas and
for other areas the Bull lines must be
replaced after five years or 6 times
raising and 6 times lowering of mast
whichever is earlier.
All the sockets of discarded Bull lines
must be cut from wire rope to avoid any
re-use which may leadto accident.
iii, Mast and/or substructure raising lines
should be inspected properly before
raising or lowering. If at any point of time
there is reason to doubt the safe
condition of the raising lines, they should
be withdrawn from service immediately.
Rusty raising lines should be inspected
and replaced iffeltnecessary.
Areas adjacent to end connection i.e.
‘socket should be examined closely for
any evidence of corrosion & physical
damage.
;. Bull ines showing kinking, crushing, or
any other damage resulting in distortion
ofthe rope must be replaced.
. Bull lines must be replaced if there is an
indication of corrosion.
|. Bull lines with any broken wires must be
replaced & discarded.
If surface wear reduces the measured
diameter of the Bull lines at any point to.
less than 90 % of the nominal diameter,
the Bulllinesmust be discarded.
Discoloration of the wires and other
evidence of overheating, such as loss of
lubrication, pitting of wires caused by
electrical arching etc. may be
detrimental. Bull lines which have been
exposed to excessive temperature for an
excessive length of time may have a
significantly reduced strength, hence it
must be discarded.
