DESCRIPTION

The Mk 57 was an improved submarine-laid, moored U.S. mine for use against high-performance submarines. It had a fiberglass case (unlike
the Mk 56, which has a nonmagnetic, stainless steel case) and a magnetic firing mechanism.

STATUS

Initial operational capability 1964. Not in production. No longer in service.
