Genetics Worksheet for Students

This document contains a genetics worksheet with multiple questions about monohybrid and dihybrid crosses, sex-linked inheritance, blood typing, and polygenic traits. Students are asked to determine genotypes and phenotypes from genetic crosses, show expected ratios, and solve genetics problems through the application of Punnett squares and Mendelian principles. They must also distinguish between dominant and recessive alleles, heterozygous and homozygous genotypes, and incomplete dominance versus codominance.

GENERAL BIOLOGY 2
Genetics Worksheet
Name: Section:

Directions: Answer the following genetic problems. Remember when you are doing a genetic
cross to follow the steps below to complete!

STEP 1: Determine what kind of problem you are trying to solve.

STEP 2: Determine letters you will use to specify traits.
STEP 3: Determine parent’s genotypes.
STEP 4: Make your punnett square and make gametes
STEP 5: Complete cross and determine possible offspring.
STEP 6: Determine genotypic and phenotypic ratios.

1. Write the genotype for each person based on the description:

a. Homozygous for the “B” allele __________
b. Heterozygous for the “A” allele __________
c. Type O __________
d. Type “A” and had a type “O” parent __________
f. Blood can be donated to anybody __________
g. Can only get blood from type “O” donor __________

2. For each genotype, indicate whether it is heterozygous (HE) or Homozygous (HO)

AA Ee Ii Mm
Bb Ff Jj Nn
Cc GG Kk OO
Dd HH Ll Pp

3. For each of the genotype below, determine the phenotype.

Purple flower are dominant to white flowers Brown eyes are dominant to blue eyes
PP ___________________ BB ___________________
Pp ___________________ Bb ___________________
pp ___________________ bb ___________________
Round seeds are dominant to wrinkled Bobtails are recessive (long tails dominant)
RR ___________________ TT ___________________
Rr ___________________ Tt ___________________
rr ___________________ tt ___________________

4. Polygenitic Inheritance
A. most of your traits are controlled by the interaction of _____________________
B. multiple genes working together produce a continuous distribution in a
“___________________________” curve of degrees.
C. examples of polygenetic traits
1. __________________________ 3. __________________________
2. __________________________ 4. __________________________
D. The __________________________ heavily influences polygenetic inheritance.
Mendelian Genetics:
****Remember to always:
1. List traits and alleles for each problem 3. List of possible gametes
2. List of Parental Genotype 4. Write genotypic and phenotypic ratio

1. Two cats are mated. One of the parent cats is long-haired (recessive allele). The litter which results
contains two short-haired and three long-haired kittens. What does the second parent look like, and what
is its genotype?

2. Alfred is a farm owner who have a rabbit with a genotype ggBb is crossed with a female rabbit with
the genotype GgBb. In rabbits, gray hair is dominant to white hair. Also, black eyes are dominant to red
eyes. Show the cross between the two rabbits and answer the following questions.

Trait: _________________________________________________
Allele: _________________________________________________
Genotype: _________________________________________________

a. How many out of 16 have gray fur and black eyes?

b. How many out of 16 have gray fur and red eyes?

c. How many out of 16 have white fur and black eyes?

d. How many out of 16 have white fur and red eyes?

Non-Mendelian Genetics

1. In gumamela, red (R) and white (W) are pure-breeding colors, while hybrids are pink. If a red
gumamela is crossed with a white gumamela. What will be the phenotype of the F2 generation
(assuming the F1 generation self-pollinates)? Show the punnet square of P1, F1 and F2 Generation.
2. In cats, there are black brazillian short hair cats and white Brazilian short hair cats. If a black and
white colored cat are crossed all their offspring are white with black spots.
a. Is this incomplete dominance and codominance? Explain your answer.

b. if a spotted cat is crossed with a black cat, what would be the genotypic and phenotypic ratios of the
offspring?

3. Coat Color in rabbits is inherited as a series of multiple alleles. In the case of rabbits, there are four
alleles and each one is expressed with a different phenotype. Look at the summary table below:
Phenotype Allele Pattern of Inheritance
Dark gray coat C Dominant to all other alleles
Chinchilla cch Dominant to himilayan and to white
Himalayan ch Dominant to white
White c recessive
Suppose you cross a chinchilla rabbit (cch ch) with a Himilayan (ch c). What are the possible offspring?

4. In fruit flies, eye color is sex linked trait. Blue is dominant to white.
a. What are the sexes and eye colors of the flies with the following genotype?
XB Xb _________, _____________ XB Y _________, _____________ Xb Xb _________, _____________
X X
B B _________, _____________ X Y _________, _____________
b

b. What are genotypes of these flies:

White eyed, male: __________________ Blue eyed, female ( Heterozygous): __________________
White eyed, female: __________________ Blue eyed, male: __________________
c. Show the cross of the white eyed female Xb Xb with a blue eyed male XB Y. how many are:
White eyed, male __________________ Blue eyed, female :__________________
White eyed, female __________________ Blue eyed, male : __________________
5. Reynald and Faiza think their baby was switched at the hospital. Faiza has a blood type “O” and
Reynald has a blood type “AB”. And the baby blood type is “B”.
A. Faiza’s genotype: _______________
B. Reynald’s genotype: _______________
C. Baby’s genotype: _______________
D. Show the punnet square showing all possible genotypes for children produced by this couple.
E. was the baby switched?
