High School Requires Students To Wear Clear Backpacks To Prevent Gun

Violence
by Justina Bakutyte | March 29th 2018

Following the deadly mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas high school in
Parkland, Florida, school's officials have instated a new rule that requires all
students to wear clear backpacks and identification tags at all times. The February
14 shooting has left 17 people dead and 17 more wounded after 19-year-old
Nikolas Cruz opened fire at the high school.
According to Robert W. Runcie, the superintendent of Broward County Public
Schools, said "Clear backpacks are the only backpacks that will be permitted on
campus," promising they will be provided free of charge along with the ID badges.
In his letter to parents, Runcie wrote:
"We want to assure you that the safety and security of our students and employees
remain our highest priorities."
Additional security measures include updating video surveillance, a higher budget
for mental health services, and plans to install metal detectors at all school
entrances. Based on the Florida law, the county will receive $8.5M to fund at least
one armed police officer at each school and $6M to expand mental health services.

The drastic measures were taken when just weeks after the deadly shooting
officials arrested two students carrying knives on campus, and another one
making threats on social media. Nikolas Cruz's younger brother was arrested
trespassing on school grounds earlier this week. The same day, a Broward
Sheriff's Office deputy was suspended for sleeping in his patrol unit on the
Stoneman Douglas campus.
It's clear the security at Marjory Stoneman Douglas is a huge issue, but many
students aren't happy with the new clear backpack policy. Many believe it's
insufficient, and a trivial attempt at curbing gun violence when in reality what the
country needs are strict gun control laws.
