In the early twentieth century, an American woman named Emily Post wrote a book on etiquette .
This book explained the proper behavior Americans should follow in many different social (32) ,
from birthday parties to funerals. But in modern society, it is not simply to know the proper rules for
behavior in your own country. It is necessary for people (33) work or travel abroad to understand
the rules of etiquette in other cultures as well.
Cultural (34) can be found in such simple processes as giving or receiving a gift. In Western
cultures, a gift can be given to the receiver with relatively little ceremony. When a gift is offered, the
receiver usually takes the gift and expresses his or her thanks. (35) , in some Asian countries, the
act of gift-giving may appear confusing to Westerners. In Chinese culture, both the giver and receiver
understand that the receiver will typically refuse to take the gift several times before he or she finally
accepts it. In addition, to (36) respect for the receiver, it is common in several Asian cultures to
use both hands when offering a gift to another person.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the question from 37-41:
Nanotechnology is the creation and use of materials or devices at extremely small scales. These
materials or devices fall in the range of 1 to 100 nanometers (nm). One nm is equal to one-billionth of a
meter (.1 m), which is about 50,000 times smaller than the diameter of a human hair. Scientists refer to
the dimensional range of 1 to 100nm as the nanoscale, and materials at this scale are called nanocrystals
or nanomaterials.
The nanoscales is unique because nothing solid can be any smaller. It is also unique because many of
the mechanism of the biological and physical world operate on length scales from 0.1 to 100nm. At
these dimensions materials exhibit different physical properties: thus scientists expect that many novel
effects at the nanoscale will be discovered and used for breakthrough technologies.
A number of important breakthroughs have already occurred in nanotechnology. These
developments are found in products used throughout the worlds. Some examples are catalytic converters
in automobiles that help remove air pollutants, devices in computers that read from and write to the
hard disk, certain sunscreens and cosmetics that transparently block harmful radiation from the Sun, and
special coatings for sports clothes and gear that help improve the gear and possibly enhance the athlete’s
performance. Still, many scientists, engineers, and technologists believe they have only scratched the
surface of nanotechnology’s potential.
Nanotechnology is in its infancy, and no one can predict with accuracy what will result from the full
flowering of the field over the next several decades. Many scientists believe it can be said with
confidence, however, that nanotechnology will have a major impact on medicine and health care: energy
production and conservation: environmental cleanup and protection: electronics, computers, and
sensors: and world security and defense,
( Adapted from Encarta DID 2009)

EDUCATION IN THE FUTURE
Education is another area of social life in which information technology is changing the way we

field. Through their computers and the wonders of virtual reality they can participate in lifelike
stimulated experiences. Consider the following scenario of the future of education made possible
through developments in information technology.
For children over the age of 10, daily attendance at schools is not compulsory. Some of the older
children attend school only once or twice a week to get tutorial support or instruction from a teacher.
For the most part, pupils are encouraged to work online from home. Students should complete a
minimum number of study hour per year; however, they may make up these hours by studying at home
at times that suit their family schedule. They can log on early or late in the day and even join live classes
in other countries. In order to ensure that each student is learning adequately, computer software will
automatically monitor the number hours a week each student studies online as well as student's learning
materials and assessment activities. Reports will be available for parents and teachers. The software can
then identify the best learning activities and conditions for each individual student and generate similar
activities. It can be also identify areas of weak achievement and produce special programs adjusted to
the students' needs.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on you answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the questions.
Body language is a vital form of communication. In fact, it is believed that the various forms of
body language contribute about 70 percent to our comprehension. It is important to note, however, that
body language varies in different cultures. Take for example, eye movement. In the USA a child is
expected to look directly at a parent or teacher who is scolding him/her. In other cultures the opposite is
true. Looking directly at a teacher or parent in such a situation is considered a sign of disrespect.
Another form of body language that is used differently, depending on the culture, is distance. In North
America people don't generally stand as close to each other as in South America. Two North Americans
who don't know each other well will keep a distance of four feet between them, whereas South
Americans in the same situation will stand two to three feet apart. North Americans will stand closer
than two feet apart only if they are having a confidential conversation or if there is intimacy between
them.
Gestures are often used to communicate. We point a finger, raise an eyebrow, wave an arm or
move any other part of the body— to show what we want to say. However, this does not mean that
people all over the world use the same gestures to express the same meanings. Very often we find that
the same gestures can communicate different meanings, depending on the country. An example of a
gesture that could be misinterpreted is sticking out the tongue. In many cultures it is a sign of making
a mistake, but in some places i communicates ridicule.
The dangers of misunderstanding one another are great. Obviously, it is not enough to learn the
language of another culture. You must also learn its non-verbal signals if you want to communicate
successfully.
Question 39. What is the passage mainly about?
A. The significance of non-verbal signals in America
B. Non-verbal communication across cultures
C. Misunderstandings in communication
D. Interpretations of gestures in different cultures

Educating children at home as an alternative to formal education is an option chosen by families in
many parts of the world. The homeschooling movement is popular in the United States, where close to
one million Children are educated at home. In Canada, 1 percent of school-age children are
homeschooled, and the idea also enjoys growing popularity in Australia, where 20,000 families
homeschool their children. The movement is not limited to these countries. Homeschooling families can
be found all over the world, from Japan to Taiwan to Argentina to South Africa.
Homeschooling is not a novel idea. In fact, the idea of sending children to spend most of their day
away from home at a formal school is a relatively new custom. In the United States, for example, it was
not until the latter part of the nineteenth century that state governments began making school attendance
compulsory. Before that, the concept of a formal education was not so widespread. Children learned
the skills they would need for adult life at home from tutors or their parents, through formal instruction
or by working side by side with the adults of the family.
In the modern developed world, where the vast majority of children attend school, families choose
homeschooling for a variety of reasons. For people who live in remote areas, such as the Australian
outback or the Alaskan Wilderness, homeschooling may be their only option. Children who have
exceptional talents in the arts or other areas may be homeschooled so that they have more time to devote
to their special interests. Much of the homeschooling movement is made up of families who, for various
reasons, are dissatisfied with the schools available to them. They may have a differing educational
philosophy, they may be concerned about the safety of the school environment, or they may feel that the
local schools cannot adequately address their children's educational needs. Although most families
continue to choose a traditional classroom education for their children, homeschooling as an alternative
educational option is becoming more popular.

Although speech is the most advanced form of communication, there are many ways of communicating
without using speech. Signals, signs, symbols, and gestures may be found in every known culture. The
basic function of signal is to impinge upon the environment in such a way that i attracts attention, for
example, the dots and dashes of a telegraph circuit. Coded to refer to speech, the potential for
communication is really great. Less adaptable to the codification of words, signs also contain meaning in
and of themselves. A stop sign or barber pole conveys meaning quickly and conveniently. Symbols are
more difficult to describe than either signals or signs because of their intricate relationship with the
receiver's cultural perceptions. In some culture, applauding in a theater provides performers with an
auditory symbol of approval. Gestures such as waving and handshaking also convey certain cultural
messages.
Although signals, signs, symbols, and gestures are very useful, they do have a major disadvantage.
They usually not allow ideas to be shared without the sender being directly adjacent to the receiver. As a
result, means of communication intended to be used for long distances and extended periods are based
upon speech. Radio, television, and the telephone are only a few.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D to indicate the correct answer to each of
the questions from 43 to 50.
It is commonly believed in the United States that school is where people go to get an education.
Nevertheless, it has been said that today children interrupt their education to go to school. The
distinction between schooling and education implied by this remark is important.
Education is much more open-ended and all-inclusive than schooling. Education knows no bounds. It
can take place anywhere, whether in the shower or on the job, whether in a kitchen or on a tractor. It
includes both the formal learning that takes place in schools and the whole universe of informal learning.

The agents of education can range from a revered grandparent to the people debating politics on the
radio, from a child to a distinguished scientist. Whereas schooling has a certain predictability,
education quite often produces surprises. A chance conversation with a stranger may lead a person to
discover how little is known of other religions. People are engaged in education in infancy. Education,
then, is a very broad/inclusive term. It is a lifelong process, a process that starts long before the start of
school, and one that should be an integral part of one's entire life.
Schooling, on the other hand, is a specific, formalized process, whose general pattern varies little from
one setting to the next. Throughout a country, children arrive at school at approximately the same time,
take assigned seats, are taught by an adult, use similar textbooks, do homework, take exams, and so on.
The slices of reality that are to be learned, whether thev are the alphabet or an understanding of the
workings of government, have usually been limited by the boundaries of the subjects being taught. For
example, high school students know that they are not likely to find out in their classes the truth about
political problems in their communities or what the newest filmmakers are experimenting with. There are
definite conditions surrounding the formalized process of schooling.
Question 43. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. The best school teach a wide variety of subjects.
B. Education and schooling are quite different experiences.
C. Students benefit from schools, which require long hours and homework.
D. The more years students go to school, the better their education is.
Question 44. What does the author probably mean by using the expression “children interrupt their
education to go to school” in paragraph 1?
A. Going to several different schools is educationally beneficial.
B. School vacations interrupt the continuity of the school year.
C. Summer school makes the school year too long.
D. All of people's life is an education.
Question 45. The word “chance” in paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to

Question 47. The phrase “For example,” in paragraph 3, introduces a sentence that gives examples of....

A. Without formal education, people would remain ignorant.
B. Education systems need to be radically reformed.

FAMILY LIFE
Children can learn a lot from doing household chores. Doing chores helps children learn about what they
need to do to care (26) themselves, a home and a family. They learn skills they can use in their
adult lives, like preparing meals, cleaning, organizing and keeping a garden. (27) in chores also gives
children experience of relationship skills like communicating clearly, negotiating, cooperating and working
as a team. When children contribute to family life, it helps them feel competent and responsible. Even if
they don't enjoy the chore, when they keep going they get the feeling of (28) that comes with finishing a
task. And sharing housework can also help families work better and reduce family stress.
The secret for involving children in household chores is asking for contributions that you value and that
(29) your children's ages and abilities. A chore that's too hard for a child can be frustrating - or
even dangerous - and one that's too easy might be boring. Even a young child can start to help out if you
choose activities that are right for his age. You can start with simple jobs like looking after his own toys.
Chores like this send the message to your child that his contribution is important. (30) your
child is old enough, you can have a family discussion about chores. This can reinforce the idea that the
whole family contributes to how the household runs.

FUTURE JOBS
The Trump campaign ran on bringing jobs back to American shores, although mechanization has been
the biggest reason for manufacturing jobs' disappearance. Similar losses have led to populist movements
in several other countries. But instead of a pro-job growth future, economists across the board predict
further losses as Al, robotics, and other technologies continue to be ushered in. What is up for debate is
how quickly this is likely to occur.
Now, an expert at the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania is ringing the alarm
bells. According to Art Bilger, venture capitalist and board member at the business school, all the
developed nations on earth will see job loss rates of up to 47% within the next 25 years, according to a
recent Oxford study. "No government is prepared," The Economist reports. These include blue and
white collar jobs. So far, the loss has been restricted to the blue collar variety, particularly in
manufacturing.
To combat "structural unemployment" and the terrible blow it is bound to deal the American people,
Bilger has formed a nonprofit called Working Nation, whose mission it is to warn the public and to help
make plans to safeguard them from this worrisome trend. Not only is the entire concept of employment
about to change in a dramatic fashion, the trend is irreversible. The venture capitalist called on
corporations, academia, government, and nonprofits to cooperate in modernizing our workforce.

COFFEE CU LTURE
The first Starbucks coffee shop opened in 1971 in downtown Seattle, Washington, in the United
States. It was a small coffee shop that roasted its own coffee beans. The coffee shop’s business did well,
and by 1981 there were three more Starbucks stores in Seattle.
Things really began to change for the company in 1981. That year, Howard Schultz met the three men
who ran Starbucks. Schultz worked in New York for a company that made kitchen equipment. He
noticed that Starbucks ordered a large number of special coffee makers, and he was curious about the
company. Schultz went to Seattle to see what Starbucks did , and he liked what he saw. He wanted to
become part of the company. In 1982, the original Starbucks owners hired Schultz as the company’s
head of marketing.
In 1983, Schultz traveled to Italy. The unique atmosphere of the espresso bars there caught his eye.
To Schultz it seemed that Italians spent their daily lives in three places: home, work , and coffee bars .
His experience in Italy gave Schultz a new idea for Starbucks back in Seattle.
Schultz created an atmosphere for Starbucks coffee shops that was comfortable and casual, and
customers everywhere seemed to like . Between 1987 and 1992, Starbucks opened 150 new stores---
and that was only the beginning. As a matter of fact, by the year 2000, three new Starbucks stores
opened somewhere around the world every day!
Today, Starbucks has thousands of stores, including stores in twenty-six countries. One thing that
helps make Starbucks succeed in cities outside the United States is the way Starbucks works with local
stores and restaurants. By working together with a store already in the city, Starbucks gains an
understanding of customers in the city. This understanding helps Starbucks open stores in the right
locations for their customers.

Our planet is continually changing, causing habitats to be altered and modified. Natural changes tend
to occur at a gradual pace, usually causing only a slight impact (1) individual species. (2)
, when changes occur at a fast pace, there is little or no time for individual species to react and
adjust to new circumstances. This can create (3) results, and for this reason, rapid habitat loss
is the primary cause of species (4) . The strongest forces in rapid habitat loss are human
beings. Nearly every region of the earth has been affected by human activities, particularly during this
past century.
The loss of microbes in soils that formerly supported tropical forests, and the extinction of fish and
various (5) species in polluted habitats and changes in global climate brought about by the
release of greenhouse gases are all results of human activities.

UNDERWATER RESEARCH
Fourteen-year-old Miguel Diaz talks about an exciting science project

Last month I got the chance to take part in an underwater research project in an area of the Gulf of
Mexico called the Flower Gardens. A team of professional researchers, led by the scientist Dr. Matt
Phillips, was trying to learn more about the fish and various creatures that live in this part of the sea.
The Flower Gardens are a long way from the shore and we spent three days on a boat.

The team used a piece of underwater equipment called a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) to
collect information. The ROV could measure water depth and temperature and it also had a camera that
sent live film back to the boat. The ROV was great fun. It was controlled by a computer on the boat, and
I was allowed to operate it a few times.

However, the thing I enjoyed most was diving into the water. At first, I was quite frightened— mainly
because I couldn’t see land in any direction. But as soon as I jumped into the water, I wasn’t afraid
anymore. It was amazing to see the colorful fish swimming around and I could see all the way to the
Flower Gardens, which are almost 30 metres down.

I will never forget the Flower Gardens. The trip was like a holiday but I also learnt new things
about science and research projects. The team was very friendly and everyone was happy to explain
what they knew about the sea. It was a great opportunity and it has made me think about my goals in
life. The experience will definitely help me work harder to become a scientist.

A POWERFUL I N FLU ENCE
There can be no doubt at all that the Internet has made a huge difference to our lives. Parents are
worried that children spend too much time playing on the Internet, hardly (23) doing anything
else in their spare time. Naturally, parents are curious to find out why the Internet is so attractive, and
they want to know if it can be harmful for their children. Should parents worry if their children are
spending that much time staring at their computers?
Obviously, if children are bent over their computers for hours, (24) in some game, instead
of doing their homework, then soothing is wrong. Parents and children could decide how much use the
child should make of the Internet, and the child should give his or her (25) that it won't interfere
with homework. (26) the child is not holding to this arrangement, the parents can take more
drastic steps. Dealing with a child's use of the Internet is not much different from negotiating any other
sort of bargain about behavior.
Any parent (27) is seriously alarmed about a child's behavior should make an appointment
to discuss the matter with a teacher. Spending time in front of the screen does not necessarily affect a
child's performance at school. Even if a child is absolutely crazy about using the Internet, he or she is
probably just going through a phase, and in a few months there will be something else to worry about!

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
answer to each of the questions.
In 1900 the United States had only three cities with more than a million residents-New York,
Chicago, and Philadelphia. By 1930, it had ten giant metropolises. The newer ones experienced
remarkable growth, which reflected basic changes in the economy. The population of Los Angeles
(114,000 in 1900) rose spectacularly in the early decades of the twentieth century, increasing a dramatic
1,400 percent from 1900 to 1930.
A number of circumstances contributed to the meteoric rise of Los Angeles. The agricultural
potential of the area was enormous if water for irrigation could be found, and the city founders had the
vision and dating to obtain it by constructing a 225-mile aqueduct, completed in 1913, to tap the water
of the Owens River. The city had a superb natural harbor, as well as excellent rail connections. The
climate made it possible to shoot motion pictures year-round; hence Hollywood. Hollywood not only
supplied jobs; it disseminated an image of the good life in Southern California on screens all across the
nation. The most important single industry powering the growth of Los Angeles, however, was directly
linked to the automobile. The demand for petroleum to fuel gasoline engines led to the opening of the
Southern California oil fields, and made Los Angeles North America's greatest refining center.
Los Angeles was a product of the auto age in another sense as well: its distinctive spatial
organization depended on widespread private ownership of automobiles. Los Angeles was a
decentralized metropolis, sprawling across the desert landscape over an area of 400 square miles.
It was a city without a real center. The downtown business district did not grow apace with the
city as a whole, and the rapid transit system designed to link the center with outlying areas withered
away from disuse. Approximately 800,000 cars were registered in Los Angeles County in 1930, one per
2.7 residents. Some visitors from the east coast were dismayed at the endless urban sprawl and
dismissed Los Angeles as a mere collection of suburbs in search of a city. But the freedom and mobility
of a city built on wheels attracted floods of migrants to the city.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the questions.
One of the greatest security threats in the online world is computer hacking. Hackers are people who
illegally enter systems. They may alter or delete information, steal private information, or spread
viruses that can damage or destroy files. But how exactly can a hacker get into a system to do these
things?
Most hackers use information called protocols that are built into computer software. These protocols
allow computers to interact with one another. Protocols are sort of like computer police officers. When a
computer connects to another system, the protocols check to see if the access is valid. The protocols can
also determine how much information can be shared between the two systems. Hackers can manipulate
the protocols to get unlimited access to a computer system.
In fact, just the act of entering a computer network is commonly considered passive hacking. Passive
hackers get a rush from just being able to access a challenging system like a bank or military network.
Another kind of hacker tries to do damage to a system. After hacking into systems, these hackers release
viruses or alter, delete, or take information. Known as active hackers, they are the more dangerous of
the two.
The easiest way to protect a system is with a good password. Long and unusual passwords are harder
for hackers to guess. For even greater Security, some online services now use "password-plus" systems.
In this case, users first put in a password and then put in a second code that changes after the user
accesses the site. Users either have special cards or devices that show them the new code to use the next
time. Even if a hacker steals the password, they won't have the code. Or if the hacker somehow gets the
code, they still don't know the password.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on you answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the questions.
It is estimated that by 2050 more than two thirds of the world’s population will live in cities, up from
about 54 percent today. While the many benefits of organized and efficient cities are well understood,
we need to recognize that this rapid, often unplanned urbanization brings risks of profound social
instability, risks to critical infrastructure, potential water crises and the potential for devastating spread
of disease. These risks can only be further exacerbated as this unprecedented transition from rural to
urban areas continues.
How effectively these risks can be addressed will increasingly be determined by how well cities are
governed. The increased concentration of people, physical assets, infrastructure and economic activities
mean that the risks materializing at the city level will have far greater potential to disrupt society than
ever before.
Urbanization is by no means bad per se. It brings important benefits for economic, cultural and
societal development. Well managed cities are both efficient and effective, enabling economies of scale
and network effects while reducing the impact on climate of transportation. As such, an urban model
can make economic activity more environmentally-friendly. Further, the proximity and diversity of
people can spark innovation and create employment as exchanging ideas breeds new ideas.
But these utopian concepts are threatened by some of the factors driving rapid urbanization. For
example, one of the main factors is rural-urban migration, driven by the prospect of greater employment
opportunities and the hope of a better life in cities. But rapidly increasing population density can create
severe problems, especially if planning efforts are not sufficient to cope with the influx of new
inhabitants. The result may, in extreme cases, be widespread poverty. Estimates suggest that 40% of the
world’s urban expansion is taking place in slums, exacerbating socio-economic disparities and creating
unsanitary conditions that facilitate the spread of disease.
The Global Risks 2015 Report looks at four areas that face particularly daunting challenges in the
face of rapid and unplanned urbanization: infrastructure, health, climate change, and social instability.
In each of these areas we find new risks that can best be managed or, in some cases, transferred through
the mechanism of insurance.

All over the country, young people are entering a world of homelessness and poverty, according to a
recent report by the housing group, Shelter.
Nearly 150,000 young people aged between sixteen and twenty-five will become homeless this year,
says Shelter. Some of the young homeless may sleep out in the open in such places as the “cardboard
city” in London, where people of all ages sleep in the open air in their only homes - cardboard boxes.
Others may find accommodation in shelters run by voluntary organisations or get a place in a hostel,
which gives them board up to ten weeks.

But who are these people? Those who are seeking a roof over their heads are mostly not runaways
but "throwaways" - people who have been thrown out of their homes or forced to leave because of

Take the case of one sixteen-year-old schoolgirl, Alice. She did not come from a poor home and had just

In 1994, the Ministry of Environment in Korea has put restrictions on packaging methods. Korea's
legal regulations require businesses to restrict their use of disposable products by reducing unnecessary
packaging materials or not giving them out to customers for free. The use of materials are difficult to
recycle is also prohibited.
Thanks to development of technology, biodegradable materials were invented to produce packaging
products. They are able to decay naturally by bacteria. Therefore, biodegradable packaging helps to
limit the amount of harmful chemicals released into the environment. In 2008, biodegradable bags were
put in use in most of the supermarkets in Korea. Paper Cup and paper bags are also given to shoppers
for free, but in a limited use.
