ANSWER SHEET

Project 1 in General Mathematics

Instructions. This project is worth 25 points. Show all pertinent solutions in the answer
sheet printed on letter-size (short) paper. Do not write anything at the back portion of
the paper. The number of points is indicated in each problem. Make your answers neat,
legibly written, and well-organized. Submit your outputs to your teacher on March 9,
2023.

Part 1 (10 points)

Fold a Paper!

For this activity, you will do a simple task of folding paper. Follow the steps and fill in
the table as you go along. You will need a piece of bond paper for the activity.

1
STEP 1. Fold the bond paper in half.
STEP 2. Count the number of small rectangles that are formed by folding the paper.
STEP 3. Continue folding the paper in half and count the number of formed rectangular
parts.
Write the numbers obtained in steps 1 and 2 on the appropriate column in the
table.
STEP 4. Continue to do steps 2 and 3 until 5 folds.

TABULAR REPRESENTATION
No of Folds 1 2 3 4 5
No of formed
parts

Questions:
1. Write a pattern that you can make out of the values in the table. Describe how
you get the number of rectangular pieces. (2 points)
Answer:

2. Without further folding the paper, use the pattern to determine the number of
small rectangles for 6, 7, and 8 folds. (2 points)
Answer:

3. If you have 10 folds, how many small rectangles can be formed? (2 points)
Answer:

4. Write the model that can be drawn out from the given paper folding experiment
and determine f(20). (2 points)
Answer:

5. Determine the number of folds done in forming 131,072 rectangular parts.

Speed Tickets

The Toll Regulatory Board of the South Luzon Expressway strictly implements speed limits
on tollways to ensure safety and avoid road accidents. The minimum speed of cars
permitted on freeways and major expressways is 60 kph, and the maximum is 100 kph.
Suppose that the violation of these limits requires a fine 𝐹, that is, ₱200 for every
kilometer or a fraction of it above the maximum and ₱150 for every kilometer or a
fraction of it below the minimum speed.
1. Construct a piecewise-defined function to model the total fine 𝐹 in terms of the
speed 𝑥 of driving. (1 point)
Answer:

2. Calculate: a) 𝐹(50); b) 𝐹(105) (1 point)

Answer:

3. Solve for 𝐹(80). What does this mean? (1 point)

Answer:

4. A motorist has been issued a speed ticket for driving at a speed of 115 kph. How
much fine will he pay? (1 point)
Answer:

5. An old and beat-up Volkswagen Beetle was apprehended and had to pay
₱3,150 for violating the speed limit. Was he under-speeding or over-speeding?
Justify your answer. (1 point)

Book Sale

For the latest mathematics book for grade 11 students, General Mathematics for
Dummies, a print-on-demand company, charges 540 pesos for each book if the
number of books that will be purchased is 1 to 10 copies. For purchasing 11 to 25 copies,
the book is sold for a discounted price of 519 pesos each plus a fixed amount of 10
pesos. Meanwhile, a special promo of 498 pesos per piece is charged for purchasing
at least 26 copies.

1. Construct a piecewise function 𝐷(𝑛) which expresses the total amount of

purchasing 𝑛 copies of the book. (3 points)

2. A group of students bought 24 copies of the book in one transaction, and

another 8 copies in another transaction. How much would the group save if they
had purchased all 32 books on a single transaction? (2 points)

Revised TRAIN Law

The table below is the revised computation for the income tax as stipulated in the Tax
Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion (TRAIN) law. Beginning January 1, 2023, the
revision aims for taxpayers to “reap the fruits of their labor while enabling them to
contribute their fair share to national development,” said Finance Secretary Benjamin
Diokno.

1. Construct the piecewise function 𝑇 that computes the annual income tax given
annual income 𝑥. (1 point)
