Welcome to MATH 1215! My name is Asmita, and my pronouns are they/them (or she/her). I’ll be
your instructor for this course. You can either call me Dr. Sodhi, Professor, or just Asmita – whichever
is most comfortable for you (I also like Dr. Asmita!). Be aware that not all your professors will be okay
with you calling them by their first name.
I am here to support you in your learning, and have tried to design the course to allow for some flexibility
so that you can work at your own pace to a certain extent (with some deadlines built in). For each lesson
in this course, you will have access to lecture videos, a handout, and a completed set of notes (the notes
will have numbers indicating which part of the page corresponds to which part of the lecture video). The
purpose of the handouts are to guide your notes, and to save you some time (if you choose to use them)
from writing down any long passages of text. The videos are posted in small parts, as well as one long video
– so you can choose the method of content consumption that works best for you. All videos have been
fully captioned. There are small understanding-checks built into the videos via quizzes – an opportunity
to pause, attempt a question, and see how well you understood the concept. These videos are not graded,
and are simply for your own purposes. “Student hours” is my preferred name for what others may call
“office hours” – I like to call this time student hours to emphasize that it is time I have set aside specifically
for you, the students – you are never an interruption during these times.
We continue to exist in unusual circumstances, and for some of us these circumstances may be more difficult
than for others. It is understood that there may be some challenges you might face as we continue with
(or return to) online learning. Again, I am here to support you in your learning – if you tell me you’re
having trouble with something, I am not going to judge you or think less of you. We’re all navigating this
uncertainty in our own ways, and I promise to approach this course with compassion.
And now, for the business part of this syllabus...
Course Description:
This course emphasizes the application of calculus to the life sciences. The concepts and content studied
include derivatives, techniques of differentiation, logarithmic and exponential functions, optimization, basic
ordinary differential equations, integration, and techniques and applications of integration.
Prerequisite: Nova Scotia Mathematics 11 and 12 or pre-calculus is highly recommended.

Calculus for the Life Sciences: Modelling the dynamics of life, 2nd Cnd. ed. by F. Adler and M. Lovrić.
Homework – For each module there will be multiple homework assignments found on Brightspace.
There may look like there are a lot of assignments (28 total for the course), but they’re very short!
The problems will be based on lecture/notes content and suggested textbook problems, and will be
delivered using WeBWork via Brightspace. The lowest 3 homework assignments will be dropped.
Written Assignments – There will be six written assignments that ask you to submit full solutions
and possibly apply the knowledge you have learned in the module to a different context than what
is covered in the lecture or homework. These assignments are to be submitted through Brightspace.
The lowest written assignment mark will be dropped.
Midterm Exam – There will be an optional midterm exam, which will become available on Wednes-
day, June 1. The midterm will not count for any marks, but if submitted to Brightspace by Monday,
June 13 you will receive detailed feedback on your work (submissions after this date may receive
feedback, but it is not guaranteed). You are highly encouraged to attempt the midterm in order to
have practice with exam-type questions, and to receive feedback on your written work.
Final Exam – There will be a cumulative final exam held in-person on Monday, June 27 from
9:00am-12:00pm. You will be permitted a study aid for this exam, in the form of one letter-sized
(8.5”× 11”) sheet of paper with writing allowed on both sides. No other materials (textbooks, notes,
calculators, etc.) will be permitted. There will be no option to write the final exam online. For
those students who cannot attend an in-person final exam on June 27, there is an option to write an
in-person make-up final on Monday, August 29 from 1:30-4:30pm.

Course Objectives:
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
Use discrete-time dynamical systems to model simple problems from the life sciences, such as popu-
lation models.
Analyze information gathered from a function and its first and second derivatives to sketch a graph
of the function.
Interpret the derivative as a rate of change, and use this to solve problems about relationships between
quantities.
Interpret the definite integral as area under the curve, and calculate this quantity using approxima-
tions and exactly.
Classify different types of differential equations, and apply appropriate techniques to solve problems
involving these equations.
Develop an appreciation of how calculus, and mathematics more generally, can be used to understand
and solve problems in the world beyond the classroom.
Reflect on your learning process and apply study skills and strategies to grow as an effective learner.

Course Policies:
We will be using Piazza for answering questions in this course – rather than emailing your content-
or problem-related questions to the instructor or TAs, you are asked to post your questions on
Piazza. The system is highly catered to getting you help fast and efficiently from classmates and the
instructor. Before accessing Piazza, you will need to enroll in our course space at https://piazza.
com/dal.ca/summer2022/math1215. You can find our class page at https://piazza.com/dal.ca/
summer2022/math1215/home (both of these are also linked on Brightspace).
For personal matters that warrant an email to be sent, please be aware that it could take some time
for a response, depending on the issue. If your question is about something in the future (for example,
you need an extension on something), you will get a response fairly quickly. If your question is about
something in the past (for example, you’re not sure about how you were graded on a problem you’ve
already submitted), it may take a little longer for a response. Emails are answered as promptly as
they can be, but please do not expect an immediate response every time.
When you send an email about the course, please include MATH 1215 in the subject line. It is also
appreciated that you sign off your email with your name, so that your instructor knows what name
they should be addressing you by.
Extensions on assessments will not be granted after the due date for that assessment has passed.
However, it is understood that things come up and life happens sometimes. If you need a short
extension and contact the instructor ahead of time, one will always be given. When a request is
made ahead of time, you do not need to submit a Student Declaration of Absence.
In addition to TA student hours, this course is also supported by the online Math Learning Centre,
which is available for assistance for the duration of the course. Information on accessing the Math

Academic integrity is valued in our virtual classroom space. Your instructor is very firm in their
belief that a classroom where students understand that they are trusted and respected is a much
more positive learning environment for everyone than one in which students are surveilled, and that
fostering a culture of trust and mutual respect encourages academic honesty. Academic dishonesty –
such as posting questions on “homework help” websites – not only hurts yourself, but other students
in the course, as the submission of academic integrity allegations takes a lot of the instructor’s time
that could be otherwise used to serve the whole class. By maintaining academic integrity throughout
the course, you contribute to a positive and respectful learning environment for all students.
