Don Bosco was a practical and enterprising
man, an untiring and creative worker who
committed all his energies to a vast apostolic
project for the human and Christian education
of the young.
Certain of having been called by God to this
mission, he founded oratories and schools;
found work for the young and stipulated con-
tracts lest they have their rights
transgressed; and gave his all
for evangelization at home
and in the Missions.
From the beginning, in order to realize his
apostolic project, he involved many lay
people, men and women, united in a stable
association: the Salesian Cooperators.
He traced out a rule of life which was simple
but rich in content, describing the
characteristics of the Salesian spirit, which
expresses and underlines specific Gospel va-
lues... strong pastoral charity, youthful dyna-
mism, a sense of Church, family spirit,
optimism, and joy...
Catholic lay people or Diocesan clergy who
live out the same charism of the Society of
St. Francis de Sales in the world...
We are called to cooperate in the mission
of the salvation of the young - above all, of
poor and abandoned youth.
To commit oneself to be a Salesian
Cooperator means to respond to the
apostolic Salesian Vocation, gift of the
Spirit, taking on a specific way of living
the Gospel and participating in the
mission of the Church.
In particular, the activity of the Salesian
Cooperator is carried out in structures
where secular circumstances offer us
greater possibilities of meaningful
involvement:
 in civic, cultural, socio-economic,
and political realities,
 in the Church,
 in places animated by the Sale-
sians, by the Daughters of Mary
Help of Christians, or by other
Groups of the Salesian Family,
especially in Oratories, Youth
Centers, and schools.
