Subject Title: Disaster Readiness and Risk Reduction

Learning competency: Enumerate elements exposed to hazards.

I. Learning objectives:
A. Identify the hazard and the elements exposed to hazard based from the picture
/situation.
B. Define hazard operationally.
C. Categorize the elements exposed to hazard as physical, social, economic, or
environmental.

II. Subject matter


A. Concepts (As categorized as elements exposed to hazard)
1. Physical – the potential degree of loss to a given element resulting from the
occurrence of a natural phenomenon of a given magnitude.

2. Social – refers to the inability of people, organizations, and societies to


withstand adverse impacts from multiple stressors to which they are exposed.
For example, weak family structures, lack of leadership for decision-making
and conflict resolution, unequal participation in the decision making, weak or
no community organizations, the one in which people are discriminated on
racial, ethnic, linguistic or religious basis.
3. Economic – the potential impact of hazards on economic assets and
processes. The social element exposed to hazards of a community can be
assessed by determining how varied its sources of income are, the ease of
access and control over means of production.

III. Learning tasks


A. Engaging task
1. Based from the pictures/situations, students (in a group) are to identify the
hazards, and the elements exposed to hazards.
2. Discuss concerns as stated in the table.

B. Exploring task
1. Come up with a group answer.
2. Fill answers in the Manila paper using similar table below.

C. Explaining task
1. With two (2) members in a group, do the 3 to 4-minute presentation with
class.
2. Reserve questions and similar after the last group’s presentation.

D. Elaborating task
Types of elements that are exposed to hazards
1. Physical element - The physical element that is exposed to the
hazards depend on its geographic proximity to the source and origin of
the disasters, e.g. if an area lies near the coast lines fault lines,
unstable hills, etc.

2. Social element - Other social factors such as culture, tradition, religion,


local norms and values, economic standard, and political accountability
also play a vital role determining the social vulnerability of a
community.

3. Economic element - It also refers to the adequacy of economic fall


back mechanisms and the availability of natural resources in the area.

E. Evaluating task
1. Based from the situation cited, give the operational definition of a hazard.
Support answer.
2. Cite a situation here inside our classroom that manifests element exposed to
hazard, the hazard itself, and the type of exposed element. Justify answer.

IV. Evaluation
A. Identify the element that is exposed to hazards in the following
situations/pictures. Write answer in the space provided. (5 points)

1. With the different elements exposed to hazards, how would you relate this to
vulnerability?
2. Give at least two (2) examples manifesting
a. physical vulnerability;
b. social vulnerability; and
c. economic vulnerability.
