Debate Speech – Is there too much pressure on girls to have perfect bodies?

Very good morning to everyone and Madam Zuraidah. Today, I would like to speak about an important
topic that has been a trend for many decades in the history of beauty standards. I believe that beauty
comes in all shapes and sizes. However, based on the society that keeps lingering around many people
right now, being skinny and slim is an alternative way to have a perfect body. Every society has set high
standards and unrealistic expectations for girls to fit into the form of beauty and feel accepted in a certain
way. On top of that, most girls are most likely to experience body-shaming by mocking and humiliating their
body shapes and sizes.
Being fat can be described to society that having a bloated stomach is unreasonable and not pretty
enough. Every day, girls struggle to find peace with their bodies and are constantly pressured to lose
weight. You may not realize that being plus-sized or having dark skin is considered ugly, and it leads to
mental health problems in physically and mentally such as; low self-esteem, lack of confidence, and even
worse, self-harm to cope with emotional pain or eating disorders. It is highly problematic among people who
tend to judge or criticize the way you look, giving pointless opinions about how your body needs to be
perfect. In addition, social media and ads play a big part when it comes to promoting unrealistic beauty
standards around the world. Many ads or other models continuously portray how young girls will attract to
or get praised if they maintain their bodies and have an ideal figure.
In conclusion, young girls were often pressured to have perfect bodies to achieve everything in the eyes of
society, where skinny and slim are the first ultimate choices.
