The difference between diplotene and dictyotene stage in prophase 1.

Gametogenesis is the process of forming viable sperm (spermatogenesis) and viable

eggs (oogenesis) during meiosis. Unlike mitosis (division of somatic cells), which occurs
after only one round of cell division, gametogenesis occurs following two rounds of cell
division. These two rounds are aptly named meiosis-I and meiosis-II. The stages of
meiosis-I, then, are prophase-I, metaphase-I, anaphase-I, and telophase-I. Further, there
are five sub-phases of prophase-I: leptotene, zygotene, pachytene, diplotene, and
diakinesis.

During the leptotene sub-phase of prophase-I of oogenesis, then, chromatin begins to

condense to form chromosomes. [This is your proverbial “beads on a string” stage.]
During zygotene, homologous chromosomes begin to synapse (forming tetrads). In the
pachytene sub-phase, synapsis of sister chromatids is complete and the resultant
structures are no longer called tetrads but rather are called bivalents. [A subtle difference
I know.] However, and more importantly, crossing over occurs between opposing
chromosomes thus increasing genetic variation. Chiasma, or connections, form where
crossing over occurs. At the same time, while homologs remain attached (at their
chiasma) to one another, sister chromatids separate.

Now to your question: during diplotene, homologs begin to migrate apart as the
chiasma migrate to the ends of the chromatids. Dictyotene, then, is a resting period
occurring at the end of diplotene. In other words, meiosis-I (prophase-I) is suspended
until puberty (or later) when the oocyte is ready for ovulation. [By the way, all of this is
occurring during primary oocyte development even before the female is born. Many of
my students lose site of that fact.]

Diakinesis is the final sub-phase of prophase-I and is marked by the termination of

chromosome condensation as the primary oocyte prepares for metaphase-I and
ovulation.
