Baptistry and Other Ordinances

Preparation for Stake and Ward Groups prior to baptisms and confirmations

The following information is provided to assist you prior to and during your visit to
the temple baptistry, so that it may be a meaningful and memorable sacred
experience.
The nominated group leader may be male or female.
Please complete and return your baptistry attendance form at least 72 hours prior
to your visit or some of the allocated ordinance time will be lost completing this
form upon your arrival.
The assigning of family name cards to specific patrons and/or officiators may be
completed before entering the temple. However, be aware it may be subject to
change by the baptistry coordinator who retains overall responsibility.
Saturday morning baptistry sessions are scheduled for 90 minutes.
There should be no more than 15 patrons acting as proxies in your group.
To enter the temple and act as proxies, young women and young men must
become
12 years of age or older during the current year. Young men must hold the Aaronic
Priesthood to act as proxies.
Each group of 15 or nearly 15 is required to bring 2 endowed brethren to act as
recorders an additional Melchizedek Priesthood holder for confirmations, plus 2

17
priests and/or Melchizedek Priesthood holders to act as baptisers. We also ask that
sufficient chaperones accompany the group to assist in maintaining reverence in
the
temple. At least one sister 18+ should accompany the group. Smaller groups may
not require this ratio of chaperones or baptisers.
Only endowed priesthood holders may officiate as the baptistry font or
confirmation recorder.
One Melchizedek Priesthood holder is required to perform the confirmation
Priests and unendowed or endowed elders may baptise. During a busy session
Priests should either officiate as baptisers or serve as proxies, but not both.
All patrons may assist with baptistry assignments, including as witnesses, with
clothing distribution, towels, assisting patrons and other responsibilities as
appropriate. However, only endowed members distribute temple garments.
Groups should arrive in the temple 30 minutes before the scheduled start time. For
example, if your session is scheduled to start at 19:00, your group should arrive at
18:30.
If you arrive early, please go to the Welcome Centre.

If you are delayed, please telephone to inform us as soon as possible (01342

831415 or 01342 831230). Arriving late will take up some of the ordinance time
All mobile phones, tablets etc. should be switched off before entering the temple.
Unendowed patrons must always be escorted to the break room by an endowed
chaperone. Unendowed individuals should not go up to the first floor.
When preparing youth for Temple ordinance work:
Emphasise the overall Temple experience, not the number of ordinances
performed.
Provide instructions to those assigned on how to receive and perform the
baptismal
ordinance, prior to the visit.
Patrons have the individual choice of acting as proxy for both baptisms and
confirmations, baptisms only or confirmations only.
Those officiating in the font area as witnesses, as the recorder or as escorts may
wear white clothing or Sunday dress, but should remove their street shoes. Those
officiating in the confirmation area may wear white clothing or Sunday dress.
It is no longer necessary for an opening hymn and prayer.
Please ensure the changing room floors are kept reasonably dry and rooms are
kept clean and tidy during and at the end of your session. It is expected that all
patrons will cooperate with ordinance workers leading the session.
Please be aware that other individuals may be allowed to share your allocated time
slot, time and availability permitting, at the discretion of the Temple Presidency.
Thank you for your cooperation

Family Temple Baptisms

Families can now book Temple baptism times in advance by appointment on

Tuesdays & Wednesdays at 7pm or Saturdays at 3pm. Arrangements at other times
can still be made, but will be subject to availability.

Visits can be scheduled by appointment on the London Temple Web page or direct
with the Temple on 01342 831 414. Individuals and small family groups may
contact the Temple directly. However, please arrange all larger group visits via your
bishop. Temple file work is only available for youth groups.

Important Temple Information

BAPTISTRY
The spiritual experience in the baptistry is enhanced by a reverent environment.
Submitting in advance the names of youth and leaders who will attend and
participate is significant in this regard.

FAMILY BAPTISTRY SESSIONS

On Tuesday and Wednesday evenings 19:00 and Saturdays 15:30, priority is given
for family baptistry sessions. Contact can also be made by telephone with a
member of the temple presidency to ascertain if other times are available.

THE TEMPLE ENDOWMENT

There is a noticeable difference when those attending to receive the endowment
have participated in a Temple Preparation Seminar. This enables the patron to be
more responsive to the teaching of the Spirit.
TEMPLE MARRIAGE
As you know it is vitally important that Bishops/Branch Presidents share the
guidelines from Handbook 1,3.5.1 under the heading “Appropriate Dress For A
Temple Marriage” with the bride and groom prior to wedding preparations
commencing. Information shared early in preparation for this culminating
ordinance can help fulfil righteous expectations and eliminate disappointment.

Family Search / Family Tree

https://familysearch.org/

The FamilySearch (FS) website stores your family history, and helps you search
family history records worldwide to find your ancestors, provides the means to
print out forms for your temple work and to record these sacred Temple
ordinances. To access this site you will need your Church Account ID and password.
If you need any help with this please contact a Temple & Family History Consultant
in your ward. The church also provides the FamilyTree (FT) mobile app, which
provides the same functionality as FamilySearch on a mobile device.
It is recommended that, in addition to your records held in FS/FT, you also use a
separate database programme (such as RootsMagic) in order to keep full control of
your information; records in FS/FT can be accessed and changed by other people.
Pictures and stories about your ancestors can also be added and shared with other
family members. The site contains comprehensive training and help.
All Church members are encouraged to use this site frequently to gain a lifelong link
to their ancestors. At the London 2019 RootsTech conference, Elder Bednar
encouraged those in attendance to use the FT app as a simple missionary tool,
helping those you meet to learn about their ancestors.
Although people can access FS/FT from home, Family History Centres (FHC) are still
vital for the following reasons:
● Full access to premium sites, which at home only give limited access.
● Online films in some cases cannot be fully viewed from the internet at home
because of licence restrictions.
● Viewing of microfilm/fiche has to be done in a FHC.
● Scanning directly into FS/FT can only be from the specialist scanner in FHCs

Family Search Indexing

http://indexing.familysearch.org

Become an indexer and help to unlock the world’s records by joining thousands of
worldwide volunteers:
● Help create free indexes of genealogical records
● Volunteer from home anytime – online access 24/7
● Minutes a week is all it takes – start and stop at your convenience
● Large variety of projects – new additions weekly
● Various project difficulty levels from beginner to advanced
