A UNIQUE OBSERVATION OF THE COSMOS

The 2010s brought with them important observations that have revolutionized the study
of the universe. In 2013, the European Space Agency launched Gaia, a satellite that
collects distance measurements of more than a billion stars in the Milky Way, as well as
speed data from more than 150 million stars.
This dataset has helped scientists create a 3D movie of our galaxy, unprecedented
images of galaxy formation and the changes they undergo over time.
In 2018, scientists published the latest version of the Planck satellite's measurements of
the universe's background radiation, which contains fundamental clues to the
ingredients, structure and rate of expansion of the cosmos. The rate of expansion that
Planck observed differs from the current one, a possible "crisis in cosmology" whose
explanation could require new physical laws.
Also in 2018, the Dark Energy Observatory published its first dataset, which will
contribute to the search for hidden patterns in the structure of the universe. In April
2019, a team of scientists from the Event Horizon Telescope revealed the first image of a
black hole silhouette thanks to an international initiative to observe the core of the
galaxy M87.
