LEC 2 New Elements and Principles

The J. Paul Getty Museum defines contemporary art as "art made and produced by artists
living today. Today's artists work in and respond to a global environment that is culturally
diverse, technological advancing and multifaceted."

Appropriation

is the practive of creating new work by taking a pre-existing image from another source
- art history books, advertisements, the media and transforming or combining it with
new ones.

Performance

a time-based art form that typically features a live presentation to an audience or to


onlookers (as on a street).

In performance, it is not necessary that you will dance, a mere sort of movement is already a
performance, provided that, it reflects what is defined about performance art.

Space

Many contemporary artists work with space by focusing on real space dimensions of a
room, the spaces we move through the city or in the natural world, even the limitless
spaces of the sky or the virtual space of the Internet.

Installation Art

utilizes multiple objects, often fro various mediums, and takes up entire spaces.
used to describe large-scale, mixed-media constructions, often designed for a specific
place or for a temporary period of time.

Hybridity

the usage of unconventional materials mixing of unlikely materials to produce an


artwork.

Technology

technology is a reality in the present0day world, and contemporary artists have used
technology in the creation and disemmination of works of arts.
