I. Problem Description

Reading is one of the fundamental and necessary skills all learners must have

since it allows them to understand the world and its meanings. It is a vital ability

that needs to be nurtured developed at the early learning stages of students. With

the lack of capability to read various words and decipher their meanings, learners

will experience difficulties in understanding more in-depth lessons like word

recognition and reading comprehension.

According to the DepEd Memorandum 213 s. 2020, Schools are required to

implement the “No Read No Move Policy” where learners are required to have

sufficient reading skills and comprehension for both English and Filipino languages

in order to be promoted. Furthermore, the conduct of reading assessments in

schools aims to achieve at least 75% passing rate from students, otherwise they

would require remedial reading sessions and even repetition of grade level.

The Grade VIII – Faith consists of 68 pupils in the School Year 2021-2022. In

the conducted reading assessment test for the first quarter, although none of the

pupils is a non-reader for the Filipino language, 7.35% or 5 of them were

determined as “Non-reader” for English. With this data, it is evident that these two

pupils are in need for reading remediation; thus, I made this innovation called

“Mother, Father and I” or MOFAI, an effective strategy in conducting remedial

reading. In order to formulate a reading intervention which aims to develop pupils’

reading skills with the aid and support of the closest people in their lives: Their

parents and family as a whole.

II. Objectives

To implement, and evaluate the MOFAI strategy for reading remediation and

improve the reading skills and comprehension of 5 pupils from having 7.35% to 0%

non-reader for the English language.

III. Proposed Intervention

I noticed that these pupils find it hard to grasp the lesson in every learning

competencies delivered every day in all subject areas since they don’t know how to

read; thus, the MOFAI strategy will be implemented for reading remediation.

The MOFAI strategy is a daily remedial reading activity that will be done

thrice a week in the afternoon. These will be the things needed to be done in order

to organize a group for my non-reader clienteles. Once the pupils are determined,

they will be formed into a group which will be named as the Angels Group.

Then, the teacher will call their parents for a scheduled meeting. During the

meeting, the teacher will explain the important role of partnership among the child,

parents, and teacher in their development. By doing so, the teacher will be able to

introduce the useful and modern ways in teaching reading to the parents. These

will include multimedia video clips, use of different approaches like Marungko, and

giving of printed reading materials in a “tarpapel” form for increased sized and

visibility.

IV. Research Questions

1. What is the reading capability of the pupils before the implementation of the

MOFAI strategy?

2. What is the reading capability of the pupils after the implementation of the

MOFAI strategy?

Results and Discussion

Basing and or following my intervention timeline, I have made a daily

recording in terms of the progress of their reading skills. I have given them

assessment test every two weeks and recorded their scores as well as analyzed

them whether they showed improvement or not. The table below clearly shows.

VI. Conclusion

With the initial 8-month duration of MOFAI implementation, I could already

forecast its end result since with the progress shown in the reading performance of

my two Learners at risk, the effective and productive impact of the project has

become evident making it truly commendable and highly effective and efficient.

VII. Personal Reflection

I was born to a family of educators. My grandfather Daniel Mandin was the

Principal of Agay-ayan Elementary School during the World War II and my aunts

and uncles here like former Schools Division Superintendent Domingo Samson,

and Supervisors Renato and Lor Villafranca, and in Bohol are mostly educators.

So, it is evident in my bloodline my fervent love for teaching.

Therefore, in my 25 years of teaching experience, I always see to it that I

could give a valuable impact to my learners when the time they get home from

school. Doing this through almost beyond three generations - the father and his

sons and or daughters were my pupils in their respective time, has been fulfilling

and bringing me the feeling like heavens filled with contentment.

Educating a child is a passion and true dedication. I believe that as a

teacher, I should always use my mind, heart and energy in order to nurture a

learner effectively and fill his mind with all the basic valuable knowledge, and

learning reading tops them all.

Doing an intensive house to house visitation in implementing MOFAI has

been an exhaustive task but due to my love of educating children which could even

be traced to my bloodline, I can still do my noble duties and responsibilities with

smile in my face.

VIII. Sustainability Plan

In my 25 years of experience as a teacher, it is my perennial concern to

always have slow readers in my classroom; the more when distant learning has

been implemented amid the spread of the dreaded COVID. Therefore, MOFAI has

been crafted coupled with more efforts and focus which are needed to sustain the

innovation, hence I need to have a strong partnership with the stakeholders, solicit

their useful ideas and assistance in dealing with urgent needs and or problems that

may arise.
