5% potassium iodide
2% starch
Chromate ions, CrO42- will oxidise iodide ions, in the presence of acid H+, and produce aqueous
iodine, I2, which can be titrated with sodium thiosulphate. You are to use this reaction to show
that the CrO42-, ion is reduced to Cr3+ during this reaction.
(a) Use a burette, measure between 45.00 and 45.50 cm3 of FB1 into the 250 cm3 volumetric flask. Fill
the flask with distilled water, stopper and shake the flask. Label this flask FB3.
Volume of FB1/cm3
Empty the burette, wash, rinse with distilled water and FB3. Fill the burette with FB3.
(b) Pipette 25.0 cm3 of FB2 into a conical flask and add, from a measuring cylinder, 10 cm3 of dilute
sulphuric acid, and 10cm3 of 5% potassium iodide.
Titrate the contents of the conical flask with FB3 until the colour of the iodine solution has faded to
a yellow colour. Turn off the burette and add 1 cm3 of starch indicator and continue the titration until
the blue-black colour of the starch–iodine complex disappears, leaving the transparent pale-blue
colour of Cr3+.
Repeat the titration until at least two titres obtained vary by no more than 0.1 cm3. Record the results
in the table shown. Cross out the word Rough if it is an accurate titration.

of FB3 used in the titration.
CALCULATION:
1. Calculate the concentration in mol dm-3 of stock sodium thiosulphate, Na2S2O3.5H2O in FB1. [2]
2. Calculate the concentration in mol dm-3 of diluted sodium thiosulphate, Na2S2O3.5H2O in FB3. [2]
3. Calculate the number of moles of dilute sodium thiosulphate FB3 run into the conical flask during
the titration. [1]
4. Write two half equations to show the chemical reactions that occur when S2O32- ions react with I2
(use your data booklet). [2]
6. Calculate the number of moles of CrO42- ion pipetted in the titration flask. [1]
7. Use your answer above and the oxidation numbers to show that CrO42- has been reduced to Cr3+.
