The Sahara Desert
The Sahara is a desert, but there are some small cities nearby which have water
from oases. There are people who live in houses. Made of bricks, and nomads who
travel from place to place. Nomads live in campsites and go to open markets to sell or
exchange animals for goods. Most governments send teachers to the campsites, so
children can learn how to read and write.
People who live the desert eat meat, and cereals and grow fruit and vegetables.
They make cheese from the milk of female camels, and butter from camels’ humps.
They get water from the oases.
Under the sand and rocks of de Sahara there is a lot of oil, so companies extract
it and transport it is sent to many parts of the world.

The Olympic Games
There are Olympic Games every four years. In 2000, they were held in Sydney,
Australia. But, do you know the origin of the Olympic Games?
It all started in Ancient Greece. The Olympic games were the greatest of all the Greek
religious festivals.
Every four years, the athletes from all the Greek cities got together at Olympia, and took
part in athletic games in honor of the gods. Some of these games were running races,
boxing and wrestling matches.
All the participants kept their bodies in good condition and showed their strength and
skills at the games.
But apart from athletic contests, there were contests in poetry, speech-marking, and art.
In that way the participants developed their bodies, minds and imagination.

SPACE
There are millions of other galaxies with millions of stars in them. From our planet, we
can see 8000 (eight thousand) stars, but because of the atmospheric fog we can only see
2000 (two thousand) at night.
Man can design wonderful machines that can fly up into space: rockets and space
shuttles. A shuttle is like an airplane that reaches into space, transporting man to
different missions.
Yuri Gagarin, a Russian cosmonaut, was the first man in space. He orbited the in the
Vostok rocket in 1961. Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin, American astronauts, were
the first men to walk on the moon. They could get to the moon in Apollo 11 and could
walk for two hours.
Some of the many missions were to put satellites in orbit and some to do research.
The Mir Russian Station orbited in space from 1986 to 2001. it was a research station
that performed observations and experiments, but basically recorded information on life
in space.
