Selective breeding

This is a picture of hens which lay many eggs

What is selective breeding?

Selective breeding is the process by which humans use animal

breeding and plant breeding to selectively develop particular
phenotypic traits by choosing which typically animal or plant males
and females will sexually reproduce and have offspring together.
What is the characteristic of selective breeding in chickens which lay
many eggs?

 Choosing parents with particular characteristics to breed together

and produce offspring with more desirable characteristics.

How are chickens raised?

 They are raised in large, open structures known as grow out

houses.
 These houses are equipped with mechanical systems to deliver
food and water to the chic’s.

How to selectively breed a chicken?

 Choose chickens with particular characteristics for them to
breed together and produce fertile offspring with more
desirable characteristics.
 Or the other basic method which is quite simple.

Step 1:
 Divide the breeding age hens into two groups or families, all hens
in one family are similar in appearance while the hens in other
groups are similar. An example of doing this is to use colored leg
bands around the leg of the chicken to designate the families or
groups.

Step 2:

 To begin the system of breeding u should use a cock that is

unrelated to the hens.

Step 3:
 Each year only breed one family

Step 4:

Only breed from hens that are close to the standard as possible.
Weigh every hen to make sure your certain that u maintain correct
weight for the chicken.

What makes chickens lay a lot of eggs?

 Quality of environment and exposure to daylight – chickens need
at least 14 hours of daylight to lay eggs, this means during the
winter they will produce less. Size of the flock – the higher the
flock the higher the production.

How do scientists work today?

 Today scientists are professionals that conducts or gathers new

research to further knowledge in a particular area.
 And today scientist have improved our standard of living and
methods of transport.

How did scientists work in the past?

 Scientists in the past were known as natural philosophers
 Investigated natural phenomena
 Theory plus experiments.
