Activity 7: Measure the Speed of a Motor using Photo-Tachometer

Name: ____________________________

I. Objectives:
1. Acquaint in using the photo-tachometer for measuring the speed of the motor.

II. Procedure:
You will mount the DC motor to the workstation and connect it in the shunt configuration.
1. Locate the DC motor/generator template, called escutcheon, and place it over the
motor connection jacks on the left side of the workstation. The template is used to
identify the electrical connections for the motor that is mounted above the
connection jacks. Mount the coupling guard over the motor shaft.

2. Connect the lead wires according to the diagram.

3. Turn on the main power circuit breaker and turn the voltage control knob clockwise
to 10%.
4. Measure the rotation speed of the motor shaft using the photo tachometer.
5. Press and hold the measure push-button. Point the light though the coupling guard
and toward the motor shaft.
6. Record the reading from the photo-tachometer display in the table:

Voltage Control Setting Measured Voltage (F1-F2) Motor Speed (rpm)

10%
20%
40%
50%

7. Turn the voltage control knob fully counterclockwise to 0%

8. Turn off the main power circuit breaker.
