Lesson3 Pre-activity-Geogebra
Lesson3 Pre-activity-Geogebra
Instructions:
Welcome to the world of construction! Before you get to your rulers and compasses, try GeoGebra
and have some fun with dynamic geometry. Make sure you follow all the steps as follows:
EXPLORE
1. Go to https://www.geogebra.org/geometry?lang=en
2. Construct a segment AB so that you can move both point A and point B.
3. Construct a midpoint C of segment AB so that however you move A or B, point C is always the
midpoint.
4. Construct a line that is perpendicular to segment AB at point C.
5. Construct a circle that is centered at point A and has a radius equal to segment AB. Then, construct
another circle that is centered at point B and has a radius equal to segment AB.
6. Construct the intersection points of the two circles, let’s call them point D and E.
7. Construct polygon ABD and ABE. Now take a look at the figure you’ve just created. How do we
call triangle ABD and ABE?
Move all the points in the figure around, do triangle ABD and ABE change? How do they change?
What is something that they don’t change?
TASK
A rectangle can be defined as a quadrilateral with three right angles. Construct a rectangle in GGB
according to this definition. Think about all the steps that you just followed, and use GGB tools like
constructing perpendicular lines.
CHALLENGE YOURSELVES
1. An equivalent, less common definition, for a rectangle is a quadrilateral with diagonals that bisect
each other and are congruent. Construct a rectangle in GGB according to this definition. (Drag-test to
verify that the rectangle is not only a square.)
2. Construct a diameter of a circle. Construct another diameter of the same circle. (Drag-test each of
the four endpoints of the diameters; explain why dragging some endpoints results in different dynamic
interactions with object(s), based on the construction procedures used to create the endpoints.)
