Equations with Logarithms

Just a big caution. ALWAYS check your solved valued with the original logarithmic equation.

Remember: It is ok to have values of x such as positive, 0 and negative numbers. However, the logarithm of
a negative number or zero are both not defined. Therefore, it is not allowed to have a logarithm of a
negative number or a logarithm of 0 when substituted into the original logarithm equations. Those
solutions are not valid. They are called extraneous solutions.

1) log 𝑥 + log 20 = 3

2) log 𝑥 3 = log 6 + 2 log 𝑥

3) 2 log 𝑥 = log(10 − 3𝑥)

4) log 4 + 2 log(𝑥 − 3) = log 𝑥

5) 4 log 7 3 + 2 log 7 5 = log 7 𝑥

6) 6 log 5 2 − 2 log 5 4 = log 5 𝑥

7) log(𝑥 + 1) − log 𝑥 = 1

8) log(𝑥 + 6) = 1 + log(𝑥 − 3)

9) log(3𝑥 + 5) − log(2𝑥 + 1) = 1 − log 5

10) log(𝑥 − 1) − log √5 + 𝑥 − log √5 − 𝑥 = 0

11) log 2 + log(11 − 𝑥 2 ) = 2 log(5 − 𝑥)

12) log(3 − 𝑥 2 ) = log 2 + log 𝑥

13) log(5𝑥 + 4) − log 2 = 2 log(𝑥 + 4)

14) log 9 (𝑥 + 1) + log 9 (𝑥 + 1) = 2

15) 2(log 2 𝑥)2 − 10 log 2 𝑥 + 8 = 0

16) 3 log 2 𝑥 − 2 log 4 𝑥 = 2

17) log 3 𝑥 2 + log 3 𝑥 − 6 = 0

18) (log 2 𝑥) 2 − 5 log 2 𝑥 = 0

19) 4 log 𝑥 = 2 log 𝑥 + log 4 + 2

20) log 𝑥 (𝑥 2 + 10) − log 𝑥 (𝑥 + 5) = 1
