LEARN HOW TO IMPROVE HEALTHCARE USING MEDICAL RESEARCH

AND INFORMATION TECHNOLOGIES
The Master’s in Health Sciences educates health scientists
who are able to design solutions to the challenges
presented by modern healthcare. You will learn how to
convert the results of fundamental and applied clinical
research into modern customised healthcare solutions. To
this end you will be using new medical and information
technologies including virtual reality, augmented reality,
embodied monitoring, and pervasive and unobtrusive
systems. During the programme you can specialise in one
of three tracks:
● Personalised Monitoring & Coaching
● Optimisation of Healthcare Processes
● Innovation in Public Health
Health scientists at the University of Twente know how to
translate results from fundamental and applied clinical
research into state-of-the-art healthcare provision. The
focus in this programme is on improving healthcare using
medical and information technology. You will be able to
work in our Technical Medical Centre. A unique and globally
acknowledged centre where education, research and
industry join forces to create, develop and test ground-
breaking improvements and innovations for healthcare.
During your education you will be participating in the top
technical medical research programmes at our Technical
Medical Centre.

MASTER’S STRUCTURE
HOW TO COMPOSE YOUR
MASTER'S?
In the programme you will deal with questions from everyday practice. What is the best way to make a diagnosis?
How to optimise the healthcare process for the patient? What is the best treatment, and how can new technologies
contribute? Should a hospital invest in a new technology? If a new technology is demonstrably relevant, how to
implement it? How to tell if a hypermodern treatment is better than the old one? Or, on a more political level, how
can authorities improve the health conditions of their populations? You will learn to take a critical approach to
research and research results; your own as well as others.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE
The Master’s in Health Sciences is a one-year programme
consisting of 60 credits. The programme is taught entirely
in English and you can start each year in September. In the
first quartile of this Master’s you will start with three
general courses:
● Health economic modelling
● Stakeholder preference elicitation and decision support
● Data science
SPECIALISATIONS
As of the second quartile you will choose one of the
following specialisations, each focusing on a specific area
within the field. You can now also opt to obtain a teaching
degree.
● Personalised Monitoring & Coaching
● Optimisation of Healthcare Processes
● Innovation in Public Health
In the third and fourth quartile you will finish your
programme with a Master’s assignment (30 EC), in which
you will write a thesis related to a research topic. The choice
of topic is largely up to you, as long as applying health
sciences is essential to solving your research question. You
can either choose an assignment provided by or through
the University of Twente or find your own client to perform
your research for.

How to compose the Master's in Health Sciences?

What your curriculum looks like, depends on the choices
you make in composing your Master’s.

There are two steps in doing so.

STEP 1: CHOOSE A MASTER’S TRACK

Before you start with your Master's, you need to choose a
Master's track, in order to specialise within the field of
Health Sciences. The Master’s in Health Sciences has
three tracks:

INNOVATION IN PUBLIC HEALTH

The aim of this specialisation is to identify the most
effective ways to organise, manage, finance and deliver
high quality care in our society from a public point of
view.

UT.ONL/HS-IPH

OPTIMISATION OF HEALTHCARE PROCESSES

In this specialisation students learn to apply methods of
early health technology assessment in order to optimise
processes in and over healthcare organisations.

UT.ONL/HS-OHP

PERSONALISED MONITORING & COACHING

This specialisation focuses on using technology to create
innovative personalised eHealth services that substantially
contribute to sustainable, efficient and effective
(personalised) healthcare.

STEP 2: COMPOSE YOUR INDIVIDUAL STUDY

PROGRAMME
After registering for your Master’s specialisation, you will
compose your own study programme, in consultation
with your specialisation coordinator. Each specialisation
contains a number of core courses and a master’s
assignment that reflects the nature of the specialisation.

Furthermore, you have the opportunity to participate in a

wider selection of Health Sciences courses and even
electives beyond the programme, both inside and outside
of the University of Twente!

The Master’s in Health Sciences has three specialisations:  Personalised Monitoring & Coaching, Optimisation of
Healthcare Processes and Innovation in Public Health.
PERSONALISED MONITORING & COACHING
Are you eager to apply technology to improve human well-
being? Do you want to learn how to use wearables and
smartphones to gather patient data, and then translate this
data into effective decisions and actions? How to coach
people in developing healthy behaviour? Or how to develop
technology to support self management among people
with chronic illnesses? Then the specialisation in
Personalised Monitoring & Coaching may be just right for
you.
This specialisation focuses on using technology to create
innovative personalised eHealth services that substantially
contribute to sustainable, efficient and effective
(personalised) healthcare for all citizens. You will:
● learn how to deal with methods and models for
monitoring data;
● be involved in designing personal coaching strategies
through technology;
● participate in current research projects in healthcare, and
apply methodologies to design solutions for
personalised coaching;
● learn about eHealth applications such as internet
assistance and personal coaching via smartphones and
wearables. You will even be wearing one of those
wearables yourself; by tracking and analysing your own
data you will become your own research object.
After completing the programme with this specialisation,
you will be able to work as a consultant in the field of data
analysis and implementation, for hospitals, insurance
companies and similar organisations.
OPTIMISATION OF HEALTHCARE PROCESSES
Would you like to help the healthcare sector to improve the
quality of medications and health products? Are you eager
to look for ways to reduce waiting times for surgeries or
appointments in hospitals? Want to support healthcare
organisations in the implementation of innovations? Or to
help set up a fair system for financing health service
deliveries? Then the specialisation in Optimisation of
Healthcare Processes may be just what you’re looking for.
This specialisation addresses finances, logistics and
management of healthcare. Amongst other things, you will
investigate how to use simulation models and data to gain
better insight and support decisions. In the process, by
assessing which technologies are worth investing in (and
which aren’t), you will contribute to vital decision making in
the healthcare sector. You will be looking at healthcare at
the organisational level, with a focus on the strategic
component of healthcare management: how is healthcare
arranged, both financially and practically, and how can
improvements be made?
You will:
● examine healthcare institutions and organisations, and
try to determine the best way for them to focus their care
processes;
● learn how to improve processes within and between
healthcare organisations using new methods;
● discover how to design and implement healthcare
processes in an efficient and effective way. The big
challenge here is to make sure the different steps in the
care process are perfectly aligned to the patient’s needs.
After completing the programme with this specialisation,
you will be eligible for work as a project leader
implementing new care concepts, a policy adviser in a
hospital, or a consultant in the healthcare sector, facilitating
collaboration between healthcare organisations.

CAREER PROSPECTS FOLLOW A PHD PROGRAMME

Upon graduation you can decide to pursue a professional
career in healthcare right away. With a Master of Science
degree in Health Sciences, you will be ideally suited to
tackle challenges at the highest level in all areas of
healthcare, for instance:
● in hospitals;
● within insurance companies;
● in home care;
● within consultancy agencies;
● within the government;
● in the medical industry.
You can be a manager, implement new care concepts as a
project leader, or facilitate collaboration between healthcare
organisations as a policy maker or consultant. It is also
possible to follow a PhD or EngD programme or start your
own business. On average, our graduates manage to find
work within just a little over two months.
GET A JOB IN INDUSTRY OR GOVERNMENT

Science degree in Health Sciences, you will be ideally suited

A PhD programme at Twente Graduate School (TGS)
involves spending four years studying a particular research
area in-depth at one of our research institutes. The research
area most suited for you as a Master in Health Sciences
would be Biomedical Engineering. When you successfully
obtain your PhD, you will be awarded the title of Doctor
(Dr). You can also opt for our MSc+PhD trajectory: a
research route in which the Master’s in Health Sciences is
followed by the PhD phase. Typically, you will already be
working on your PhD research topic or proposal during the
last part of the Master’s. An extracurricular Research
Honours programme can also be integrated. 
FOLLOW A ENGD PROGRAMME
For excellent professionals and graduates with a master’s
degree from a university, TGS offers 5 different Professional
Doctorate in Engineering, or EngD programmes. These two-
year, tailored programmes are aimed at you becoming a
high-level technological designer. The EngD programme
most likely to match your interests as a Master in Health
Sciences would be Healthcare Logistics. On successfully
completing the programme, you will receive a certified
diploma and the academic degree title, Professional
Doctorate in Engineering (EngD).

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
The route to apply depends on your nationality and
educational background. Have you decided that you want to
study the Master's in Health Sciences at the University of
Twente? Find out if you are admissible:
● Dutch HBO student: As a bachelor's student from a
university of applied sciences (HBO), it is necessary to
follow a pre-master's first.  an (international) research university who cannot be
● International student: First, find out if you are
admissible via the online eligibility check. For the
minimum CPGA of your country, please visit our

For the English language requirements tests, you need to
score a minimum overall score as well a minimum score
on each section of the tests. You can find the specific
subscores per test below.  Our eligibility check is designed to assist you as a student

PRE-MASTER
A pre-master's is a transfer programme for students of
a Dutch university of applied sciences ('hbo' in Dutch) or
admitted directly to the master's they wish to follow. The
goal is to bridge the gap between your current bachelor's (in
a related field) and your future master's. Once you have
successfully completed the pre-master's, you will be
admitted to the master's.
