Title of Textbook/LM to Study: SELF LEARNING MODULE COOKERY 7/8
Chapter: Pages: _7-10_ Topic: Calculate the Cost of Production
Objective:
Ø discuss principles of costing
Ø compute the cost of production such as markup, selling price, and
purchase cost

Let Us Discover

Markup refers to the difference between the selling price of a good or service
and its cost. It is expressed as a percentage above the cost. In other words, it is the
added price over the total cost of the good or service that provides the seller with a
profit.

How to Calculate Percentage Markup?

Calculating markup is taking the difference between how much an item costs
and how much you sell the item for – it is your profit item. Any person working in a
retail business will find the skill of calculating markup percentage valuable—a
business-oriented person's goal for a profit. Thus, calculating the percentage markup
is significant.

Calculate Peso Markup

Subtract your selling price from the purchase cost.

Formula:

Example:
Selling price 23.00

1 GSC-CID-LRMS-ESSLM, v.r. 03.00, Effective June 14, 2021

Purchase cost - 13.00
Peso markup ₱ 10.00

Calculate the Selling Price

Add your purchase cost and the peso markup.
Formula:

Example:

Purchase Cost 15.00

Peso Markup + 3.00
Selling Price ₱ 18.00

Calculate the Purchase Cost

Subtract the selling price from the peso markup.
Formula:

Example:
Selling price 23.00
Peso mark-up 3.00
Purchase cost ₱20.00

Calculate the Percentage Markup based on the Purchase Cost

Divide the peso markup by the purchase cost and multiply by 100.

Formula:
PERCENTAGE MARKUP = Peso Mark-up × 100
Purchase Cost
Example:
Peso markup 5.00
Purchase cost/Buying price ÷ 10.00

2 GSC-CID-LRMS-ESSLM, v.r. 03.00, Effective June 14, 2021

Percentage mark-up 0.5 x 100 = 50%

Calculate the Percent Markup based on Selling Price

Divide the peso markup by the selling price and multiply by 100.

Formula:
PERCENTAGE MARKUP = PESO MARKUP × 100
SELLING PRICE

Example:
Peso markup 5.00
Selling price ÷ 15.00
Percentage mark up 0 .33 × 100 = 33%
