Name of student: Jovan Bilkhu Date: May 21, 2023

Teacher: Ms.Browne Block: B

The Capstone strand I have chosen: Project Strand

Proposed title for my Project Proposal: (write the proposed title for your Capstone Project in one clear
sentence): Basics of Finance for Young Adults

What is your inquiry question that interests you for further research? It should be a question that connects with
a purpose, passion or personalized area of interest for you. This is a question that you cannot just google an
answer for. Please see examples from your Capstone booklet.
My inquiry question is:

Are young adults who received financial literacy education from their parents and the empirical knowledge attained will
it allow them to succeed and achieve financial security in their lives?

Rationale/context: Detail your reasons for choosing this inquiry question. Explain WHY you are choosing to
investigate this topic as a major area of focus. How does this area of inquiry connect to your passion(s),
purpose? Why is it of personal interest to you?

The average Canadian aged 18-25 spends their money irresponsibly and in today’s world with the way that the
economy is, its imperative to be smart with your spending and savings if you want to be successful in life.

This topic interests me as I am passionate about not only helping myself but helping others and teach them to gain
control of their financial health. I want to empower others and provide them with the knowledge they need to make
better financial decisions. Times have changed since my parents were raised and how putting your money into a
savings account is not the only way to build financial wealth. As young adults we need to start looking out for ourselves
and that means making sure we have the education and knowledge about the basics of finance and money
management. By exploring the basics of finance, I aim to contribute to filling this educational gap and equip young
adults with the knowledge and skills needed to make better financial choices and decisions.

Background: What background knowledge/connections/prior learning do you have in this area of inquiry?

I have a lot of general knowledge about finances and the real estate market, since it is an interest and passion of
mine. I am always doing research and learning new things. Learning about how banks work, how the world currency
work. How different investments can have different returns and risks. Building your investment portfolio at a young age
is important as it goes a long way putting certain percentage of funds aside for growth. I am particulary surrounded
with several people in my life that are knolwedgeable about finance or have life long careers as financial advisors.
Many of my family, friends and relatives either work in real estate or finance. Through conversations with these
professionals, I have continued to build my knowledge in the areas of financial literacy, investments and real estate. I
have been saving my money since I have been a child. My parents invested in an RESP fund the moment I was born.
The experience i have primarily is connected to family members in this industry. I also know that this will benefit me in
the near future when i am starting up my own career in the same field.

Career connections: What is your intended career area at this point in time? What connections does this
inquiry question have to your life, academic and/ or career goals?

My intended career area at this time is real estate and business investor. I want to be able to invest in properties and
turn them into a regular source of income. This project is going to help me dive deep into the topic of finances, more
specifically, how the importance of financial literacy especially is important for young adults to be successful and
smart with their money. Its also important that young people have a starting point or some tips to work off of if they
want to invest their money, namely in property.

Interdisciplinary and core competencies connections: What subject areas and core competencies will
be connected with your project? Outline and explain the connections.

Other Subjects: Math. Learning Standard financial literacy: gross and net pay

Core competencies that will be connected to my capstone project are:

Communication – I will be extending my network of people that I can speak to and consult with them through active
listening, note taking and asking key questions, and followup questions to understand how my mentors and contacts
made it to where they are today. During my one on one interviews, I maintained eye contact, was actively engaged to
demonstrate the value i was gettign from speaking with them, which also ignited my passion for my subject even
more.

Cirtical Thinking - analyzing and evaluating the information I learned. I was able to assess the reliability and reputation
of my sources, by doing my own research online and talking to my family members. I was able to come up with my
own conclusions from the informaiton that was presented to me. I questioned what I needed to question or asked for
clarifying examples. For instance, during the capstone research project, I carefully evaluated all of the different
sources, I double checked and triple checked my source of information, analyzed the info before i put it into my
project.

Personal Awareness and Social Responsibility – The connection with this competency is my passion and desire for
my career path, which is real estate and to enter the investor field. Having the personal awareness that i have room to
grow and need to continue to build my knowledge in order to effectively part my knowledge and research to young
adults and build a reputable business, where people will trust in the information i have to share. I recognize that as I
work on this project, my confidence and skill level is improving as i continue to learn and build my knowledge not only
on the capstone project but also my own general interest and enhancing these skills.

1
The presentation medium that I will be using is Microsoft Word to create a financial literacy hand out for young adults
aged 18-25. I will also use Powerpoint to present slides of my capstone journey.

Description of my Capstone project. Specific Project Details of the Capstone Project: what will you
research, create, study, produce, solve, investigate? What product will be produced at the end of this
project for evaluation. Write a one-page description outlining your proposal.

For my capstone project, I will research financial literacy online, consult with primary and trustworthy sources, With
my trusted sources I will have several conversations and interviews with the financial professionals. I will prepare a
list of questions that will help me attain this information, with a focus on understanding what they do, how they do it
and how they are successful and understand any challenges they may have faced when getting into this industry.
Also understand the skills necessary and the education background needed for someone like me and young adults to
be successful in the future.

I will also view some documentaries, one being The Big Short which is about how the housing market contributed to
the crash of the economy leading to a recession and how the investors found loopholes in the system.

The other is going to be reading a book called Rich Dad, Poor Dad that describes a Dad’s story from 2 different Dads.
One his biological father who grew up working for money, and his best friend’s dad who he considered also his father
and who made his money work for him resulting in him being financially wealthy. He prepared this book and wanted
to teach his kids how to be financially responsible in their life.

I did various research online to gather and find relevant information for my project. I looked at various sources such
as banks to understand the many types of portfolios or ways of saving and investing money. I consulted with various
investment companies to learn more about how they conduct their business and how I can impart that knowledge to
young adults.

Another area that i focussed on was understanding how the real estate market functions and how it can fluctuate
based on interest rates and inflations. I relied on getting this information from many of my family members who are in
this industyr and doing financially well and active on social media platforms.

The final product that i aim to produce is a financial guide via Canva where I will create a digital 12 page guide
outlining fundamentals of financial literacy for young adults aged 18 to 25 years old with my primary focus on helping
young adults on how they can be financially literate and allow them to be responsible with their money in order to
avoid making serious and costly mistakes, which many people do when they are young since no one taught them any
better or lack of knowledge in general.

The financial uide will inlude topics such as what is inflation? Why does inflation happen? How to save and where to
spend your money, such as creating a detailed budget plan, understanding how banks and bank accounts work and
how public versus private companies work when investing in stocks? I will cover information about what are bonds?
The risks associated with bonds. My handout will also include How to buy your first property and what what they need
to know about 1st Homebuyers plan along with covering information about how mortgages operate and the most
efficient way of paying off the mortgages. My guide will also incorporate important defintions around financial glossary
terms to help them understand what each definitions means.

I am confident this guide will be of benefit to the young adults who are looking for guidance and rely on reliable
sources in this guide to help them become financially educated in their future.

2
Resources/ Technology/Skills: Make an assessment of the resources, technology and skills you will
need to be able to complete this project. What is your plan to be able to access/learn all of the resources
necessary to achieve completion of this project? Detail your plans.

My assessement of resources, technology and skills that I will need to complete this project is first and foremost,
having the appropriate connections with individuals that I can trust to guide me on this project, and computer skills.

Other skills such as researching online resources I will review relevant blogs and forums to stay up to date on the
latest trends and learn about best practices, which will help me to create my literacy handout and build my
knowledge and understanding of financial literacy.

For my primary sources my main reason for networking and connecting with family and friends who are in this line of
work, and have been in this field for at least over 10 years, as they will be sharing their experience, expertise and
knowledge that will help me have a better understanding of what I can expect when I begin my career journey and
learn from their experiences and gain access to new resources for the successful completion of my project.

Specific skills needed for this project include: skills in how to conduct research, knowing which resources are reliable
and trustworthy, analytical skills to break down the information, writing skills to appropriately convey the correct
messaging, designing skills to allow me to make an creative presentation, and most importantly financial planning
skills along with organizational skills which are imperative for this project as it will help me stay organized in a
efficient manner to complete this project on time.

Mentors/Community Connections: What types of mentor(s)/community connections will you need to

help you complete your capstone project? How will your mentor(s) help you? What is your plan to access
the mentorship/community connections necessary for this project?

As stated above my primary assessement for resources includes consulting with family and friends that have been
in the business or industry for at least over 10 years. This way I am getting reliable information and speaking to
those have have the relevant experience to help me with my project and are trustworthy and open to sharing their
ideas and suggestions. I may also talk to friends of my parents who have worked in the banking and mortgage field
and also has several years of experience and many accolades to showcase their skills and abilities and most
importantly success in thier finacial roles.

In addition, I am going to ask a family friend who is a trusted financial professional to be an official mentor to me so
that I can interview them, bounce questions off of them when needed, and to be able to gain new knowledge of
things I don’t already know that would be important information to add to my financial guide. I plan to see them in
person and access them via teams or phone call meetings.

Project limitations: What are some project limitations and potential obstacles that you foresee that might
affect progress with your Capstone Project?

Time constraints- It’s a big project and knowing myself, I am a procrastinator, so I worry if I will be able to complete
this all by the expected due date. I am also often pressure prompted. My motivation is another factor that may be an
potential obstacle, as I often get distracted by my phone or other more important and interesting things.

Knowledge-I might have some obstacles with being able to set up times to meet with professionals that I want to
interview or being able to get an adult to agree to me to be my mentor through this.

3
Other considerations: List and detail any other related information/ considerations about your project
that you feel should be included in your project proposal.

This guide is related to my research and my connections to people in the industry. Realizing there is vast
information on the internet and is soley based on my personal opinion on how young adults can be financially
eduacated.

References: Provide a literature review of 5-10 PEER REVIEWED ACADEMIC references: research,
videos, etc. that offer some preliminary research you have done for your project that shows you are able
to access the key information that you will need to be able to complete this project/work. Your list should
be written using correct APA formatting.
