ATP IGCSE NOTES

CHEMISTRY
Labelling apparatus
Names of all should be learnt
Identify mistakes
Need to know all parts of apparatus
Suggesting reasons for the experiment in the diagram
Need to know role of each thing in the experiment eg- why gas passed
through sulfuric acid? Drying agent
Recording data from measuring cylinders, burettes and timers
Need to know how to read, and from all types of apparatus
Plotting results (maybe more than one reaction)
Graph skills needed.
Interpreting results
Anomalous result, deducing results of unknown value using graph, finding
out the faster rate or slower rate of reaction
Calculating using given formulas
Remember formula if not given or use the one given. Include units
Give an advantage/disadvantage of using the type of apparatus
Remember for each type of apparatus
Suggest and explain improvements to the experiment
Better method or apparatus
Gas tests and other tests, materials for electrodes (eg), identifying
gases/materials
Flame/gas tests and other tests (generic) need to be remembered (colors
too)
Complete qualitative analysis
Identification, and observations. Also what the test tells you about the
solid. Safety measures while doing the procedure need to be known (due
to reactivity or whatever)
Tests on acids and alkalis
Planning experiments
For an experiment – apparatus, steps, safety measures, keywords for the
steps.
BIOLOGY
Experiment 1- recording results table
Correct table with all required headings, cells and units
Variables kept constant
Identify the unchanged variables given in the experiment. Use the
correct key term eg-volume
Suggest an improvement
state the improvement and explain how it will improve
Draw conclusions from the results
Greater the -, more the- statement. If its more than 1 mark, explain the
statement using data quote
Plan an experiment to test a hypothesis
Name apparatus, steps, and use keywords, safety procedure and
keywords for the steps
Make a large labelled drawing
Label atleast 2-3 parts unless asked for more. Outline only if it is
microscopic
Calculations- magnification, sfa
Describe method use to calculate
Describe differences visible
Complete table, plot results
For graph we will need to be need and be able to interpret the results
Deduce data from graph
Suggest a better method of calculation/ of measurement
PHYSICS
Recording data in a table
Calculations based on the table
How to overcome 1 difficulty/ improvement
Need to know improved experimental methods
Plotting a graph
Deducing data from graph/ equation given to us related to graph
Recording more data
Suggesting a precaution for accuracy
Basically, we need key terms and units for the above
Recording data in another table
Need to read q carefully and fill in units also
Writing conclusion to the experiment
Hypothesis statement needed with reference to data given
Quality and improvements for results
Differences due to external conditions
Estimating capacity of apparatus (beaker/test tube/thermometer)
Completing diagrams (eg circuit diagrams)
Recording readings in a table
Predicting effect of changing one or more variables in experiments
Justifying and agreeing/ disagreeing with results
Safety precaution, suggesting reasons for differences in
measurements/readings
Planning an experiment (also measuring from their diagram)
Name apparatus, steps, and use keywords, safety procedure/ accuracy
precaution if relevant and keywords for the steps. Also, a correct table,
and diagram they ask/ adding to their diagram
