3. REMINDERS

Procedure

In order to save energy, the Espace IV Phase 2 UCH cuts off the + after ignition feed after 3 minutes.

To run fault finding on a computer, it is possible to force the + after ignition feed on for 1 hour by applying the
following procedure:
– Press the card unlocking button,
– insert the card in the reader,
– press the Start button (interrupting the timed + after ignition feed mode),
– press and hold the start button for over 5 seconds until the engine immobiliser warning light starts to flash rapidly
(4 Hz).
This forced + after ignition feed mode remains on for 1 hour.
– Pressing the Start button or removing the card from the card reader cuts off the + after ignition feed but does
not cut off the forced after ignition feed timed mode. Until one hour has elapsed, activating the + after ignition
feed will restart forced + after ignition feed for the remaining time.

Fault finding – Introduction

Faults

Faults are declared present or stored (depending on whether they appeared in a certain context and have
disappeared since, or whether they remain present but are not diagnosed within the current context).

The present or stored status of faults should be taken into consideration when the diagnostic tool is switched on
following + after ignition feed being activated (without any system components being active).

For a present fault, apply the procedure described in the Interpretation of faults section.

For a stored fault, note the faults displayed and apply the Notes section.

If the fault is confirmed when the instructions in the Notes section are applied, the fault is present. Deal with the
fault.

If the fault is not confirmed, check:

– the electrical lines which correspond to the fault,
– the connectors for these lines (for oxidation, bent pins, etc.),
– the resistance of the component detected as faulty,
– the condition of the wires (melted or split insulation, wear).

Conformity check

The aim of the conformity check is to check data that does not produce a fault on the diagnostic tool because it is
inconsistent. Therefore, this stage is used to:

– carry out fault finding on faults that do not have a fault display, and which may correspond to a customer
complaint.
– check that the system is operating correctly and that there is no risk of a fault recurring after repairs.

This section gives the fault finding procedures for statuses and parameters and the conditions for checking them.

If a status is not behaving normally or a parameter is outside the permitted tolerance values, consult the
corresponding fault finding page.

Customer complaints - Fault finding chart

If the test with the diagnostic tool is OK but the customer complaint is still present, the fault should be processed by
Customer complaints.

A synopsis of the general procedure to follow is provided on the following page in the
form of a flow chart.

4. FAULT FINDING PROCEDURE (continued)

Wiring check

Fault finding problems

Disconnecting the connectors and/or manipulating the wiring may temporarily remove the cause of a fault.
Electrical measurements of voltage, resistance and insulation are generally correct, especially if the fault is not
present when the analysis is made (stored fault).

Visual inspection
Look for damage under the bonnet and in the passenger compartment.
Carefully check the fuses, insulators and wiring harness routing.
Look for signs of oxidation.

Physical inspection
While manipulating the wiring, use the diagnostic tool to note any change in fault status from stored to present.
Make sure that the connectors are properly locked.
Apply light pressure to the connectors.
Twist the wiring harness.
If there is a change in status, try to locate the source of the fault.

Inspection of each component

Disconnect the connectors and check the appearance of the clips and tabs, as well as the crimping (no crimping on
the insulating section).
Make sure that the clips and tabs are properly locked in the sockets.
Check that no clips or tabs have been dislodged during connection.
Check the clip contact pressure using an appropriate model of tab.

Continuity, insulation and resistance check

Check the continuity of entire lines, then section by section.
Look for a short circuit to earth, to + 12 V or with another wire.

If a fault is detected, repair or replace the wiring harness.

5. FAULT FINDING LOG

IMPORTANT
Any fault on a complex system requires thorough fault finding with the appropriate tools. The
FAULT FINDING LOG, which should be completed during the fault finding procedure, ensures
a record is kept of the procedure carried out. It is an essential document when consulting the
IMPORTANT!
manufacturer.

IT IS THEREFORE MANDATORY TO FILL OUT A FAULT FINDING LOG EACH TIME FAULT FINDING IS
CARRIED OUT.

You will always be asked for this log:

● when requesting technical assistance from Techline,
● for approval requests when replacing parts for which approval is mandatory,
● to be attached to monitored parts for which reimbursement is requested. The log is needed for warranty
reimbursement, and enables better analysis of the parts removed.

6. SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS

Safety rules must be observed during any work on a component to prevent any damage or injury:
– check the battery voltage to avoid incorrect operation of computer functions,
– use the proper tools.

Fault finding – System operation

The "CARMINAT NAVIGATION and COMMUNICATION" system corresponds to the "top of the range" navigation
system on Espace IV ph2. This system is also called ITS (ITS: Intelligent Transport System).
The navigation computer for this system combines the functions of the Central Communications Unit and the
Hands-Free Telephone Integrated Control computer (Modified Hands-free Kit).

General operation

The CARMINAT NAVIGATION and COMMUNICATION system is involved in the following functions:
– Tuner-amplifier.
– CD multi-changer.
– Satellite guidance navigation.
– Hands-free telephone integrated control.
– Display.
– External thermometer.
– Clock.

1 - Tuner-amplifier

This function is used for listening to AM and FM radio. The tuner-amplifier automatically selects the best frequency
for a station using the AF function. It receives road traffic information via the TMC function to optimise the
CARMINAT NAVIGATION and COMMUNICATION system guidance.

2 - CD multi-changer

The CD multi-changer located on the dashboard can hold up to 6 CDs. It can play audio CDs, CD-Rs recorded by
the customer and MP3 CDs. The number of CDs in the changer is visible using parameter PR005 Number of CDs
in the changer.

3 - Navigation

This function guides the driver by displaying maps and issuing voice messages. Addresses for guidance can be
entered via the central control or as voice commands.

4 - Hands-free telephone integrated control

This function enables the driver to use a mobile phone hands-free using the microphone located next to the driver's
sun visor and the vehicle speakers. The CARMINAT NAVIGATION and COMMUNICATION system can be used to
access the telephone directory, to receive and send calls and to receive SMS text messages. The telephone can be
connected to the vehicle using Bluetooth.

5 - Display

The display is used to display information such as navigation maps, radio, CD title, time, temperature and
information from the mobile phone

Procedures to be carried out before replacing the navigation computer:

1. Before replacing the computer (with the agreement of the Techline), read the faults and carry out a conformity
check to ensure that it is definitely faulty.

2. Before removing the computer, clear the customer's data (telephone numbers, customer address book, etc.) using
command RZ003 Parameters and customer data in the diagnostic tool.

3. After receiving the Techline's approval, remove the computer with the ignition off.

The navigation computers available from the Parts Department are supplied unconfigured and in factory mode
(tuner-amplifier set to 162 kHz AM, and it beeps for 2 minutes).

Procedures to be carried out after replacing the navigation computer:

1. Enter the unlocking code for the CARMINAT NAVIGATION and COMMUNICATION system.

– How to obtain the unlocking code for the Carminat Navigation and Communication system

– switch on the + after ignition feed,

– switch on the CARMINAT NAVIGATION and COMMUNICATION system,
– connect the Clip diagnostic tool,
– note the navigation programming key number given in the Identification menu,
– contact Techline with this navigation programming number to obtain the CARMINAT NAVIGATION and
COMMUNICATIONS system unlocking code,
– the unlocking code is requested 2 mins after the CARMINAT NAVIGATION and COMMUNICATION
system comes on,
– enter this code using the navigation central control.

Note:
If the code is incorrect, you will have to wait between 2 and 32 minutes before you can enter a code again.
Delete the incorrect code before entering the new one.
