PERFORMANCE TASK 2 (CRITIQUE PAPER)

As the author, Jose Miguel T. Dela Cruz stated in his work, “Emotional intelligence plays
a vital role in effective leadership” and that by recognizing and understanding your own emotions
and those of others can excel in building strong interpersonal relationships and foster a positive
work environment which results in improved teamwork, higher morale, and increased job
satisfaction among member. To support his claim, he stated that emotional intelligence empowers
leaders as not only can they manage their emotions and be able to make thoughtful decisions,
even in high-pressure situations but also consider the well-being and perspectives of their team
members. He also stated that leaders with strong emotional intelligence can inspire and motivate
their team members as such they can create an environment that supports personal and
professional growth thus leading to higher levels of employee satisfaction, increased
productivity, and better overall performance.

The author’s work overall is satisfactory to me, he was able to deliver his work with
organization and structure, there was a clear thesis statement, you could identify the
introduction, body, and conclusion, the transitions of his statement were also smooth except for
his conclusion which I hoped would have a different beginning paragraph as it seems more like
another introduction, but besides his grammar and use of words were commendable and his work
can definitely considered as a structured essay. However, I would like to note that even though
there were references given with the paper, he did not include citations in the paper itself, which
may be a hassle to some as they have to check which information belongs to the right citation.
Another thing that I would like to note was that on his references, one of his citation (Goleman,
D., Boyatzis, R., & McKee, A. (2002)) was a little bit older than a usual source would be, now
that can be used to his disadvantage when formulating counterclaims as the information might
not be as accurate as it was before.

Evaluating this essay taught me that emotional intelligence are one of the few qualities a
person should have to be an effective leader as it not only helps in being able to think clearly in
heavy situations but also the ability to have empathy for others. Besides acquiring new
information, this essay helped me practice and enhance skills I need when critiquing a person’s
work. Overall this paper was of great value to me.
