INTERMEDIATE CLASS 31 – Talking about future plans II

‘Shall we dance?’

In this lesson, you’ll:

✓ Learn some adjectives used to describe different places

✓ Practice making suggestions using ´shall´ / ´why don´t we´ and responding
suggestions.

WARM UP

Let’s play: GUESSING PLACES. Look at the following places and answer:

Do you know these places? Do you know where they are?

DIALOGUE
Read the following conversation between two brothers out loud with your tutor
then switch roles. Pay attention to the underlined words.

‘‘Our sister is coming ‘‘

Peter: What shall we do when our sister, Emma, comes to visit?

John: On Saturday why don´t we go for walk by the river and after that we could
meet some friends in a country pub?

Peter: Hmmm… I´m not sure. She has never been to Oxford before. I think it would
be better to take her to go sightseeing like at some old universities and the city
center. Shall we go to the Pitt Rivers museum?

John: That´s a good idea. Why don´t we have a picnic in a university park and then
go the museum in the afternoon?

Peter: If it is sunny on Sunday, shall we go for a walk by the river, then meet friends
for a drink in a country pub?

John: What a good idea!

Peter: Emma is going to love Oxford.

GRAMMAR FOCUS
Today we will take a look at spoken English when making suggestions.
This is some useful language when planning a day out.

Shall:
"Shall" is a modal verb used to indicate future action. It is most commonly used in
sentences with "I" or "we," and is often found in suggestions

SHALL + PRONOUN + BARE INFINITIVE + ?

Ex. Shall we begin dinner?

Ex. Shall we move into the living room?
Ex. Shall I help you?

Why don´t:
This is a way to make a suggestion to do something together. You use this when
you expect the listener to agree with you:

WHY DON´T + PRONOUN + BARE INFINITIVE + ?

Ex. I don't feel like cooking tonight. Why don't we order something out?
Ex. Why don't we make a deal: if I help you with this, you have to promise to come
to my game on Sunday.
Ex. Why don't we exchange business cards?

“I think it would be better” and “We could”:

This is a way to make a polite suggestion when you don´t agree with something
or you have a different idea.

I THINK IT WOULD BE BETTER + FULL INFINITIVE

WE COULD + BARE INFINITIVE

Ex. I think it would be better to order something.

Ex. We could buy a new car.
