Concept
SLOPE OF A LINE- In mathematics, the slope or gradient of a line is a number that describes both the direction and
the steepness of the line. Slope is often denoted by the letter m.

B. GIVEN AN EQUATION
- to find the slope of a line given an equation, convert the equation into its slope-intercept form; 𝑦 = 𝑚𝑥 + 𝑏,
m = slope and b = y-intercept
REMEMBER:
• Addition Property of Equality (APE) – Adding the same number on both side of the equation, balance the equation
• Multiplication Property of Equality (MPE) – multiplying the same number on both side of the equation, balance the equation
For Example:
(i) Find the slope of the line with an equation of 3𝑥 + 2𝑦 = 14
Change 3𝑥 + 2𝑦 = 14 𝑖𝑛𝑡𝑜 𝑦 = 𝑚𝑥 + 𝑏 form
3𝑥 + 2𝑦 = 14 apply Addition Property of Equality, to retain variable y and removed other terms in
the left side of the equation

(−3𝑥) + 3𝑥 + 2𝑦 = −3𝑥 + 14 it becomes

2𝑦 = −3𝑥 + 14 apply Multiplication Property of Equality, to eliminate the coefficient of y
