GRADE 8 – SYSTEM OF LINEAR EQUATIONS

Learning Competency:
categorizes when a given system of linear equations in two variables has graphs that are parallel, intersecting,
and coinciding.

Concept
Different Systems of Linear equations
A. CONSISTENT/INDEPENDENT
-the two lines intersect at exactly one point
-only have a pair of solution
-have different slopes

Here the →
The two lines intersect
only solution is (-1, 2)
had different slopes
line1 Line2

B. INCONSISTENT
-the two lines are parallel
Line2
-have no solution
-have the same slopes, but different y-intercept
line1
Here →
The two lines are parallel
no solution
had the same slopes but
different in y-intercepts

C. DEPENDENT
-the two lines coincides or lies on the same line
-have an infinite number of solutions
-have the same slopes and the same y-intercept
line1

Here →
The two lines coincides to
each other
Has infinite solutions Line2
had the same slopes and the
same y-intercepts
Note: When you say solution/s to a system of linear equation:
this/these is/are the intersection point/s between two lines
ACTIVITY
I. Identify what kind of system of linear equations does the following is, by determining
and comparing their slopes and y-intercepts. Put INTERSECTING if Consistent, PARALLEL if
Inconsistent and COINCIDING if Dependent.

1. y = 8x – 3
y = -3x – 4

2. y = – 5x – 2
5x + y = 3

3. 16x + 4y= 20
12x + 3y = 15

4. 4x – 7y = 8
x + 2y – 5 = 0

5. 5x = -3 – y
3 = 5x – y
