II. MODULE PROPER

Day 1 (February 1, 2021)
Online Discussion: SLOPE FORMULA

1
Day 2 (February 2, 2021)
PARALLEL AND PERPENDICULAR LINES
Slopes of a Parallel Lines
If m 1∧m2 represent the slopes of two parallel (nonvertical) lines, then m 1=m 2.

Slopes of Perpendicular Lines

−1
If m 1 ≠ 0∧m 2 ≠ 0 represent the slopes of two perpendicular lines, then m 1= or equivalently,
m2
m1 ∙ m 2=−1.

These two lines are perpendicular.

These two lines are parallel.

Lines in the same plane that do not intersect are parallel. Nonvertical parallel lines have the same
slope and different y-intercepts.
Lines that intersect at a right angle are perpendicular. If two lines are perpendicular, then the slope of
one line is the opposite of the reciprocal of the slope of the other (provided neither line is vertical)

EXAMPLE 1: DETERMINING THE SLOPE OF PARALLEL AND PERPENDICULAR LINES

Suppose a given line has a slope of −5.
a. Find the slope of a line parallel to the given line.
b. Find the slope of a line perpendicular to the given line.

Solution:
a. The slope of a line parallel to the given line is m=−5 (same slope).
1
b. The slope of a line perpendicular to the given line is m= (the opposite of the reciprocal of −5).
5
EXAMPLE 2: DETERMINING WHETHER TWO LINES ARE PARALLEL, PERPENDICULAR, OR NEITHER
Two points are given from each of two lines: L1∧L2. Without graphing the points, determine if the
lines are parallel, perpendicular, or neither.
L1 : ( 2 ,−3 )∧(4 ,1)
L2 : ( 5 ,−6 ) ∧(−3 ,−2)

Solution:
First determine the slope of each line. Then compare the values of the slopes to determine if the lines
are parallel or perpendicular.

For line 1: For line 2:

Label the points.
Apply the slope formula.

−1
The slope of L1 is 2. The slope of L2 is . The slope of L1 is the opposite of the reciprocal of L2. By
2
comparing the slopes, the lines must be perpendicular.

EQUATION OF A LINE (SLOPE-INTERCEPT FORM)

Log in to your google classroom for the discussion of slope-intercept form.

Day 6 (February 8, 2021)

Online Discussion: EQUATION OF A LINE (POINT-SLOPE FORM)

Day 7 (February 9, 2021)

SOLVING SYSTEMS OF LINEAR EQUATION IN TWO VARIABLES (GRAPHICALLY)

A system of two linear equations in two variables, x and y, is any system that can be written in the form.
ax +by= p
cx +dy =q
where the numerical coefficients of the variables are not both zero. The system is called since both are
linear equations.

EXAMPLE 3: Solve the system graphically.

y=6−3 x
6 x +2 y =12
Solution:
For y=6−3 x , we determine the x and y – intercepts as
follows.
x – intercept: y – intercept:
0=6−3 x y=6−3 (0)
3 x=6 y=6
x=2

For the equation 6 x +2 y =12, the x and y – intercepts are.

x – intercept: y – intercept:
6 x +0=12 0+2 y=12
4
6 x=12 2 y=12
x=2 y=6
The graph above appears to show only one line. Actually, it’s the same line drawn twice. These two
lines, really being the same line, intersect at every point along their length. This is called a dependent
system, and any point on the line is a solution.
To summarize, a system of equations may have one solution, no solution at all, or an infinite solution.
You will never have a system with two or three solutions; it will always be one, none, or infinitely many. If
the system of equations has a solution, the system is said to be consistent.
CONSISTENT – DEPENDENT SYSTEM

EXAMPLE 4: Solve the system graphically.

x + y=3
2 x+2 y=8
Solution:
For the first equation, x + y=3 ,
x – intercept: y – intercept:
x +0=3 0+ y =3
x=3 y=3

For the equation 2 x+2 y=8 ,

x – intercept: y – intercept:
2 x+ 0=8 0+2 y=8
2 x=8 2 y=8
x=4 y=4

The graphs of the equation are parallel lines. Since they are parallel, they will never intersect, and
there will be no solution to the problem.
For a system of equations with graphs which are parallel lines, there is no solution. This is called an
inconsistent system of equations, and it has no solution.
INCONSISTENT SYSTEM

EXAMPLE 5: Solve the system graphically.

x− y =−1
2 x=4− y
Solution:
For the first equation x− y =−1, we find the intercepts as
follows:
x – intercept: y – intercept:
x−0=−1 0− y=−1
x=−1 y=1

For the equation 2 x=4− y ,

x – intercept: y – intercept:
2 x=4−0 2 ( 0 )=4− y
x=2 y=4

The lines intersect at ( 1 ,2 ) . Hence, the solution to the system is x=1 and y=2.
The graph above shows two distinct nonparallel lines that cross at exactly one point. This is called an
independent system of equations, and the solution is always a point.
CONSISTENT – INDEPENDENT SYSTEM
