4. Are the slopes of the two lines equal? _________
5. Are the y – intercepts of the two lines equal?
___________
y = x -2 6. Do the two lines have an intersecting point?
__________
WHAT IS IT

There are three kinds of systems of linear equations in two variables

according to the number of solutions. These are:
1) System of consistent and independent equations
 It has exactly one solution.
 The graphs are intersecting.
 The slopes of the lines defined by the equations are not equal and their y-
intercepts could be equal or unequal.
Example:

𝑥 𝑦
Given: {
𝑥 𝑦

a) Transform each linear equation to y = mx + b.

3x - y = 1 2x + y = 3
-y = -3x + 1 y = -2x + 3
y = 3x -1 2x + y = 3
b) Identify and compare the slope and y-intercept.
Slopes: 3 and -2 They are not equal.
y-intercepts: -1 and 3 They are unequal.
3x - y = 1
Since the slopes of the lines are unequal and their
y-intercepts are not equal, then the system is consistent
and independent.

2. System of consistent and dependent equations

 It has infinite solutions.
 The graphs are coinciding.
 The slopes of the lines defined by the equations
are equal and their y-intercepts are equal.

𝑥 𝑦
Example: Given: { 3x + 3y = 6
𝑥 𝑦

a) Transform each linear equation to y = mx + b.

x+y=2 3x + 3y = 6
y = -x + 2 3y = -3x + 6
y = -x + 2 x+y=2
b) Identify and compare the slope and y-intercept.
Slopes: -1 = -1 y-intercepts : 2 = 2

Since the slopes of the lines are equal and their

y-intercepts are equal, then the system is consistent
and dependent.
3. System of Inconsistent equations
 It has no solution.
 The graphs are parallel.
 The slopes of the lines defined by the equations are equal and their y-
intercepts are unequal.
Example:

𝑥 𝑦
Given: {
𝑥 𝑦 2x + y = 4

a) Transform each linear equation to y = mx + b.

2x + y = 2 2x + y = 4
y = -2x + 2 y = -2x + 4
b) Identify and compare the slope and y-intercept. 2x + y = 2
Slopes: -2 = -2 y-intercepts : 2 ≠ 4

Since the slopes of the lines are equal and their

y-intercepts are unequal, then the system is
inconsistent.

____________________________________
WHAT IS IT

The solution of a system of linear equations can be determined algebraically

or graphically. To find the solution graphically, graph both equations in a Cartesian
coordinate plane then find the point of intersection of the graphs, if it exists.
Solving the system graphically:
Examples:
Find the solutions of the following systems of linear equations graphically.

a) {
x+y=3
Answer: The graphs of 2x – 3y = 6 and x + y=3
(3, 0)
intersect at (3, 0 ).

Hence, the solution of the system

2x - 3y =6
{ is x = 3 and y = 0.

b) { x – 2y = - 8

Answer: The graphs of x – 2y = -4 and x – 2y = -4

x – 2y = -8 are parallel.

Hence, the system has no solution.

c) {

Answer: The graphs of x – 2y = -2 and

2x – 4y = -4 coincide. x – 2y = -2
2x – 4y = -4

Hence, the system has infinite number

of solutions.
Solving the system algebraically:

A. Substitution Method

To solve a system of linear equations by substitution method, the following

procedures could be followed:

1. Solve for one variable in terms of the other variable in one of the equations. If one of the
equations already gives the value of one variable, you may proceed to the next step.
2. Substitute the value of the variable found in the first step of the second equation. Simplify
then solve the resulting equation.
3. Substitute the value obtained in (b) to any of the original equations to find the value of
the other variable.
4. Check the values of the variables obtained against the linear equations in the system.

Example:

𝑥 𝑦
Solve the system { by substitution method.
𝑥 𝑦

Solution:
1) Use x – 2y = 3 to solve for y in terms of x.
x – 2y = 3
x = 2y + 3 Add both sides by 2y
2)Substitute 2y + 3 in the equation 3x + y = 2.
3x + y = 2
3( 2y + 3) + y= 2
6y + 9 + y = 2 Distributive Property of Multiplication
7y = 2 – 9 Combining like term and Addition property
7y = - 7 Divide both sides by 7
y=-1
3) Substitute y = -1 to the variable y in equation x – 2y = 3.
x – 2y = 3
x – 2( - 1) = 3
x+2=3 Simplify
x=3–2 Addition Property of equality
x=1
4) Check by substituting the value of x = 1 and y = -1 to both linear equations.
x – 2y = 3 3x + y = 2
1 – 2(-1) = 3 3(1) + (-1) = 2
1+2=3 3–1=2
3 = 3 True 2 = 2 True

𝑥 𝑦
Therefore, the solution of the system { is (1, -1).
𝑥 𝑦
B. Elimination Method

To solve a system of linear equations in two variables by the elimination method,

the following procedures could be followed:

1. Whenever necessary, rewrite both equations in standard form Ax + By = C.

2. Whenever necessary, multiply either equation or both equations by a nonzero number so
that the coefficients of x or y will have a sum of 0. (Note: The coefficients of x and y are
additive inverses.)
3. Add the resulting equations. This leads to an equation in one variable. Simplify then solve
the resulting equation.
4. Substitute the value obtained to any of the original equations to find the value of the other
variable.
5. Check the values of the variables obtained against the linear equations in the system.

Example:

𝑥 𝑦
A. Solve the system { by elimination method.
𝑥 𝑦 7

Solution:

1) Check first if the linear equations is in standard form Ax + By = C.

x – y = 3 and x + y = 7 are in standard form.
2) Check if there are variables that the numerical coefficients are additive inverses.
In the given system, the numerical coefficients variable y are additive inverses.
3) Add the two equations.
x–y=3
x+y=7
2x = 10
x=5 Divide both sides by 2.
4) Substitute x = 5 to any of the original equations to solve for y.
x+y=7
5+y=7
y=7–5 by Addition property
y=2 Simplify
5) Check by substituting the value of x =5 and y= 2 to both equation.
x–y=3 x+y=7
5 – 2 =3 5+2=7
3 = 3 TRUE 7 = 7 TRUE

𝑥 𝑦
Therefore, the solution of the system { is (5, 2).
𝑥 𝑦 7
𝑥 𝑦
B. Solve the system { by elimination method.
𝑥 𝑦

Solution:

1. Check first if the linear equations is in standard form Ax + By = C.

Since x = -2y + 8 not in standard form, transform it to x + 2y = 8.
2. Check if there are variables that the numerical coefficients are additive inverses.
In the given system, the numerical coefficients variable y are additive inverses if we
multiply the equation 2x – y = 6 by 2. So
(2x – y = 6 ) (2)
4x – 2y = 12
3. Add the two equations.
x + 2y = 8
4x – 2y = 12
5x = 20
x=4 Divide both sides by 5
4. Substitute x = 4 to any of the original equations to solve for y.
x = -2y + 8
4 = -2y + 8
2y = 8 -4 by Addition Property of equality
2y = 4 Simplify
y=2 Divide both sides by 2
5. Check by substituting the value of x =4 and y= 2 to both equation.
x = -2y + 8 2x - y = 6
4=-2(2) + 8 2(4) – 2 = 6
4 = -4 + 8 8–2=6
4 = 4 TRUE 6 = 6 TRUE

𝑥 𝑦
Therefore, the solution of the system { is (4, 2).

WHAT IS IT

There are many applications of the system of linear equation in two

variables in real-life situations. They are used to represent situations and solve
problems related to uniform motion, mixture, investment, work, number relations,
and many others. Consider the examples below.

Example 1.

James saved 17 coins made up of 5- peso and 10- peso denominations from his
allowance in a week. How many of each denominator if his coins amount to Php 120?

Solution:

a) Understand the problem.

Let x be the number of 5-peso coins
y be the number of 10-peso coins

b) Device a plan
x + y = 17
5x + 10y = 120

c) Carry out the plan

Use the substitution method to solve the system.
In equation x + y = 17, solve for x in terms for y.
x = - y + 17
Substitute –y + 17 in equation 5x + 10y =120.
5(-y + 17) + 10y = 120
-5y + 85 + 10y = 120
-5y + 10y = 120 -85
5y = 35
y=7
Substitute y = 7 to the equation x + y = 17
x + y = 17
x + 7 = 17
x = 17 – 7
x = 10.
d) Look back.
x + y = 17 5x + 10y = 120
10 + 7 = 17 5 (10) + 10(7)= 120
17 = 17 TRUE 50 + 70 = 120
120 = 120 TRUE

Therefore, there are 10 pieces of 5-peso coins and 7 pieces of 10-peso coins.
Example 2:

Karen bought 2 banana cue and 1 orange juce and paid Php 32.00. Zia paid Php 52.00 for
3 banana cues and 2 orange juice. What is the price of each banana cue?

Solution:

a) Understand the problem.

Let b be the price of each banana cue
j be the price of each orange juice

b) Device a plan.
2b + j = 32
3b + 2j = 42

c) Carry out the plan.

Use elimination method to solve the system.
Multiply (-2) to equation 2b + j = 32.
(2b + j = 32)( - 2)
-4b - 2j = - 64
Add the 2 equations
3b + 2j = 52
-4b – 2j = -64
-b = -12
b = 12
Substitute b =12 to the equation 2b + j = 32
2b + j = 32
2(12) + j = 32
24 + j = 32
j = 32 - 24
j=8

d) Look back
2b + j = 32 3b + 2j = 42
2(12) + 8 = 32 3(12) + 2(8) = 42
24 + 8 = 32 36 + 16 = 42
32 = 32 TRUE 42 = 42 TRUE

Therefore, each banana cue cost Php 12.00.
