o graph a system of linear equations in two variables.

What’s In

Let us recall on graphing linear equations in two variables. Let

us try to draw the graph of each of the following linear equations in a
Cartesian plane and give your own idea on the following questions that follow.

1. 𝑦 = 3𝑥 + 2 2. 2𝑥 + 𝑦 = 5

Questions:
a. How did you graph each linear equation in two variables?
b. How do you describe the graphs of linear equations in two variables?

What’s New

What if the graphs of two or more linear equations in two variables are
drawn in the same Cartesian plane, how will you describe the graphs? Please see the
examples below.

Example 1: 𝑦 = −𝑥 + 7 and 𝑦 = 2𝑥 + 1
𝑠𝑙𝑜𝑝𝑒 𝑦 − 𝑖𝑛𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑐𝑒𝑝𝑡
Equation
(𝑚) (𝑏)
𝑦 = −𝑥 + 7 𝑚 = −1 𝑏=7
𝑦 = 2𝑥 + 1 𝑚=2 𝑏=1

Clipart 2

3
Example 2: 𝑦 = 5𝑥 − 2 and 𝑦 = 5𝑥 + 3

𝑠𝑙𝑜𝑝𝑒 𝑦 − 𝑖𝑛𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑐𝑒𝑝𝑡
Equation
(𝑚) (𝑏)
𝑦 = 5𝑥 − 2 𝑚=5 𝑏 = −2
𝑦 = 5𝑥 + 3 𝑚=5 𝑏=3

Example 3: 𝑦 = 3𝑥 + 6 and 2𝑦 = 6𝑥 + 12
𝒚 = 𝟑𝒙 + 𝟔
𝑠𝑙𝑜𝑝𝑒 𝑦 − 𝑖𝑛𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑐𝑒𝑝𝑡
Equation
(𝑚) (𝑏)
𝑦 = 3𝑥 + 6 𝑚=3 𝑏=6
2𝑦 = 6𝑥 + 12 𝑚=3 𝑏=6 𝟐𝒚 = 𝟔𝒙 + 𝟏𝟐

I hope you were able to catch up and understand the three examples.
Now, what have you observed in each of the graph? Describe each.

Activity 10.1 DRAW ME!

Directions: Determine the slopes and y-intercepts in each system then draw
the graph of each pair of linear equations using the same Cartesian plane. (Use a
separate graphing paper in sketching the graph.)

1. 𝑦 = −3𝑥 + 4 𝑚= 𝑏=
𝑦 = 3𝑥 − 2 𝑚= 𝑏=
2. 𝑦 = 5𝑥 + 4 𝑚= 𝑏=
−5𝑥 + 𝑦 = − 2 𝑚= 𝑏=
3. 3𝑦 = 𝑥 + 5 𝑚= 𝑏=
−2𝑥 + 6𝑦 = 10 𝑚= 𝑏=

MIND-BOGGLER:
I hope you got the correct answers! Let us dig and discover more about this
topic. Focus on each pair of linear equations in Activity 10.1 and try to give some
observations. Try to answer the following questions on your own idea.
1. Which pair of equations has graphs that are intersecting? How many
points of intersection do the graphs have? What are the coordinates of
their point(s) of intersection?
2. Which pair of equations has graphs that are not intersecting? Why?

4
What is It

What do you call the pairs of linear equations that you

have answered in Activity 10.1? Very good! Those pairs
of linear equations are called simultaneous linear equations or
systems of linear equations.
System of linear equations is a set or collection of linear
equations, all of which must be satisfied. It can be written Clipart 3
𝐴𝑥 + 𝐵𝑦 = 𝐶
a{ , where A, B, C, D, E, F are all real numbers, and the
𝐷𝑥 + 𝐸𝑦 = 𝐹
coefficients of x and y are not both zero for each equation. The point of intersection
of the graphs of two linear equations is the solution of the system.
A solution of such equations is an ordered pair of numbers that satisfies both
equations. The solution set of a system of linear equations in two variables is the set
of all ordered pairs of real numbers that makes every equation in the system true.
The solution of the system of linear equations can be determined algebraically
or graphically. To find the solutions graphically, graph both equations on a Cartesian
plane then find the point of intersection of the graphs, if it exists. The solution to a
system of linear equations corresponds to the coordinates of the points of intersection
of the graphs of the equations.

Better look at this!

Determine how many solutions does each of the pair of equations have?
System of linear equations Number of solutions
1. 𝑦 = −3𝑥 + 4 Exactly one (1)
𝑦 = 3𝑥 − 2 solution
2. 𝑦 = 5𝑥 + 4
No solution
−5𝑥 + 𝑦 = − 2
3. 3𝑦 = 𝑥 + 5 Infinitely many
−2𝑥 + 6𝑦 = 10 solutions
Let’s graph each system of linear equations in one Cartesian plane to check if
the number of solutions in each system of linear equations is correct. Describe the
graph of each system.

What I Need To Know
At the end of this lesson, you are expected to:
o categorize when a given system of linear equations in two variables has
graphs that are parallel, intersecting, and coinciding;
o determine the kind of systems of linear equations in two variables.

What’s In

Remember that the characteristics of the graphs of the system in the same
Cartesian plane can be used to determine the number of solutions a system has.

Lines are Lines are parallel. Lines are

intersecting. coinciding.
Exactly one No solution. Infinitely many
Clipart 1 solution. solution.

More so, the characteristics of the system can also be used to categorize
according to its kind.

What’s New

Given these three system of linear equations listed below, can we

determine the number of solutions right away? No, right? We can only do that by
graphing the system in one Cartesian plane.
𝑥 + 𝑦 = 2 and 3𝑥 − 𝑦 = 4 and 𝑥 + 3𝑦 = 6 and
2𝑥 + 𝑦 = 1 𝑦 = 3𝑥 + 2 2𝑥 + 6𝑦 = 12

Clipart 2

7
Let us go back in getting the slopes (𝑚) and the y-intercept (𝑏) of the
systems of linear equations.

𝑥 + 𝑦 = 2 and 2𝑥 + 𝑦 = 1 3𝑥 − 𝑦 = 4 and 𝑦 = 3𝑥 + 2 𝑥 + 3𝑦 = 6 and 2𝑥 + 6𝑦 = 12

𝑥+𝑦 =2 2𝑥 + 𝑦 = 1 3𝑥 − 𝑦 = 4 𝑦 = 3𝑥 + 2 𝑥 + 3𝑦 = 6 2𝑥 + 6𝑦 = 12
𝑚 = −1 𝑚 = −2 𝑚=3 𝑚=3 𝑚 = −1/3 𝑚 = −1/3
𝑏=2 𝑏=1 𝑏 = −4 𝑏=2 𝑏=2 𝑏=2
How would you compare the slopes of the lines defined by the linear equations in
each system? How about their y-intercepts?
What systems can you make about the solution of the system in relation to the
slopes of the lines.

By mere inspection of the constants in a system of linear equations, you can

easily tell what kind of system it is and how many solutions it has, if any.

What is It

There are three kinds of systems of linear equations in two

variables according to their number of solutions. These are:
Clipart 3
1. System of consistent and dependent equations
This is a system of linear equations having infinitely
many solutions. The slopes of the lines defined by the
equations are equal, their y-intercepts are also equal, and
their graphs coincide.
So, the system of equations 𝑥 + 3𝑦 = 6 and 2𝑥 + 6𝑦 = 12
is consistent and dependent. The slopes of their lines are
equal, their y-intercepts are also equal, and their graphs
coincide.

2. System of inconsistent equations

This is a system of linear equations having no solution.
The slopes of the lines defined by the equations are equal,
their y-intercepts are not equal; and their graphs are
parallel.
So, the system of equations 3𝑥 − 𝑦 = 4 and 𝑦 = 3𝑥 + 2 is
inconsistent. The slopes of their lines are equal; their y-
intercepts are not equal; and their graphs are parallel.

8
3. System of consistent and independent equations
This is a system of linear equations having exactly one
solution. The slopes of the lines defined by the equations
are not equal; their y-intercepts could be equal or
unequal; and their graphs intersect.
So, the system of equations 𝑥 + 𝑦 = 2 and 2𝑥 + 𝑦 = 1 is
consistent and independent. The slopes of their lines are
not equal, their y-intercepts could be equal or unequal,
and their graphs intersect.
We can also determine its kind or classification by looking at the ratio of
their constants. The table shows you how.
