WHAT’S NEW

Have you ever wondered how the insects calculate the path that they are tracking?
Did you know that some scientists claimed that a fly touches a distinct point on a
surface only once and never come back on that point again? Now read the selection
and try to imagine insects following different tracks as they fly.

Insects are flying in cartesian plane. all of them follows a linear path;
the butterfly follows the line 𝑦 = −2𝑥 + 1 and his pair 𝑦 = −2𝑥 − 1,

a bee 2𝑥 + 4 = 8 and his pair 𝑦 = 𝑥 + 2, and a lady bug 𝑦 = −5𝑥 + 4

and his pair 𝑦 = 4 𝑥 − 3.

The pair of lady bugs fly through their equations. As they move
forward, they get close to each other’s path, cross each other and
never meet again.
The pair honey bees fly through their equations. One after the other.
One is always ahead or one is always at the back. Until they realize
they’re flying on the same path.
The pair of butterflies follow through their equations. They decided
flying next to each other. They notice that as they go along the path,
they are always distant to each other, they never meet, they never
cross over each other’s path. They continue flying and never be
separated.

Analyzing Special Types of Systems


When two lines are parallel, there are no points of intersection. So, a
system of linear equations has no solutions when the graphs of the equation
are parallel.

EXAMPLE 1. Systems with no solutions


Solve by graphing> 𝑦 = −2𝑥 + 1
𝑦 = −2𝑥 − 1

Graph both equations on the same coordinate plane.


.𝑦 = −2𝑥 + 1 the slope is -2. The y intercept is 1.
.𝑦 = −2𝑥 − 1 the slope is -2. The y intercept is -1.
The lines are parallel. There is no solution.

Critical Thinking without graphing, how can you tell if a


system has no solution?

A system of linear equations has infinitely many solutions


when the graphs of the equations are the same line. The
coordinates of the point on the common line are all solutions
of the system.

EXAMPLE Systems with infinitely many solutions


Solve by graphing. 2𝑥 + 4𝑦 = 8
