LESSON
Unit Method of Assembling Sleeping Garments

1. Back and front bodice

 Join the shoulder seams

using French seam.
(With wrong side together
stitch a ⅛” seam, press the
seam allowance on one side,
turn and with right sides
together stitch a ½ ” seam.)

 Overlock the raw edge of the

armhole to prevent raveling.
(Use either a bias facing or an
all-in-one facing.)

 Join the side seams using

French seam.
(Stitch the fabric ¼” seam with
wrong side of fabric together,
press the seam allowance to
one side, turn with right side
together enclose the raw edges
stitch on ½’’ seam.)

2. Sleeves
 Overlock raw edges of the
armhole.
(Make a two row of easing
stitch.)

 Join the side seam using the

French seam.
(Sew the underarm seams with
the wrong sides of the fabric
together at ¼” then fold and
press along the seam so that
the right sides are together and
stitch at 1/4″ seam).

 Fold on the hem line and

press.
(Turn the hemline’s raw edge
under ½ ″ and press.)

 Machine sew ½” hem

allowance.
3. Facings

 Join the shoulder seam.

(Make a stitch on 1/4” seam
allowance with right side of
fabric together.)

(Press the seam allowance

open on the inside of the
facing.)

 Apply a finishing method to

the bottom raw edge of the
facing.
(The most common techniques
for clean finishing a facing's
raw edge is by serging,
binding or machine stitching.)

 Connect the facing to the

neckline.
(Pin the facing's raw edge to
the neckline's edge starting at
the shoulder seams. Match
the shoulder seams of the
garment perfectly to the
facing's shoulder seams and
place a pin through both
seams.)
(Once you've stabilized the
shoulder seams, apply pins
perpendicularly along the rest
of the neckline's raw edge.)

(Machine stitch along the

neckline's edge at the correct
seam allowance.)

(Clip seam allowance at more

curved areas using a wedge
clip to release tension along
the more curved areas of the
neckline.)

(Press the facing's seam

pointing away from the
garment. This step will
prepare the facing
for staystitching, which is a
necessary step in ensuring
that the facing lays flat on
the inside of the garment.)
(Stitch on top of the facing
through the seam allowance
on the back, at about 1/8"
away from the seam. This is
called understitching which
ensure that the facing lays
flat pointing towards the
inside of the garment.)
(Move the facing to the inside
of the garment and press the
neckline's edge.)
