FORMS OF ENERGY

Let’s Understand

Energy is the ability to do work. It is one of the basic human needs and is an
essential in the capacity to move object by the application of force.
The common examples of heat energy are sun, fire, body temperature and the
lightning.
Heat is the flow of thermal energy between two objects of different temperatures.
When we feel thermal energy occurring, we are feeling heat. The faster it moves, the more
heat we feel. Therefore, heat is often defined as thermal energy in transit.

The heat is very important in our daily life in warming the house, cooking, heating the
water and drying the washed clothes. It helps all the living things warm and helps them grow.
The heat has many usages in the industry as making and processing the food and
manufacture of the glass, the paper, the textile.

Sound energy is the energy released by the vibration of objects and measured in a
unit called joules. The sound waves of pressure that travel through medium, such air, water,
wood, or metal. It is also a form of mechanical energy. The examples of sound energy that
produce sound waves are the bells of the church, ticking of the clock, tapping the tables.
Sound waves are produced by vibration that causes the molecules of a medium to form
alternating high- and low-pressure fronts. These waves can travel through solids, liquids,
and sufficiently dense gases.
As an object, such as a piano string, vibrates, it sets the air around it into motion. The
vibration alternately compresses and rarefies the air around it. These compression waves
then propagate out from the source in three dimensions at the local speed of sound. Dense
media allow sound waves to travel faster than thin media, which is why sound travels faster
through metal or water than it does through air.

Light energy is a form of electromagnetic radiation of a wavelength, which can be

seen by the human eye. It is a type of kinetic energy. Light energy is used to help us see –
either naturally using the Sun or fire, or with manmade objects like candles or lightbulbs.

Light energy is also used by plants, which capture the light energy from the Sun and
use it to produce their food.

1
Electrical energy is energy that comes from electrical potential energy. This energy
is generated by the movement of positive and negative particles or electricity. Once electrical
energy leaves its source, it is instantly transformed into a different kind of energy. Many
things that we use every day needs electrical energy like television, car batteries, electric fan
and washing machine.

Let’s Analyze

A. What do you think will happen if there is no energy around us? Tell why energy is
important in our surrounding.
