LESSON

Properties and Characteristics of Seam

What is Seam in Apparel?

Seam is described as a line on which two or more fabrics are superimposed

over each other. Seam can also include the row or rows of threads used for
superimposing the fabrics. A seam maintains some properties that make an
accurate seam for the garments. Seam is an important element in the making of
clothing. Different properties and characteristics of seam are discussed in this
article.
Properties of Seam:
Seam used in garments will be more perfect if it maintains some properties.
These properties are mentioned in the following:

1. Perfect fabric joints,

2. No Missed or Uneven stitches,
3. No fabric damage during sewing,
4. Achievement of strength, elasticity, Durability, security and comfort,
5. Comfortable during the use of garments.
1. Perfect fabric joints

Perfect fabric joint is one of the seam’s most important properties which
helps to make a seam perfect. It’s also an important issue in seaming. This is often
seen that, fabric joint is not correct and contains fabric edge opened. So, perfect
fabric joint is must, to get a perfect seam.

2. No missed or Uneven stitches

Sometimes stitches are missing out or produced uneven stitches during

seaming, which creates faulty seam or weak seam. So, during seaming, it should be
followed carefully.

3. No fabric damage during sewing

Fabric damage-free seam is another important property of the seam. Fabric

damage occurred frequently during seaming which helps to produce faulty seam.
So, seaming should be done very carefully so that it can’t damage the fabric.

4. Achievement of strength, elasticity, durability, security, and comfort

Achievement of strength, elasticity, durability, security and comfort are the

most significant seam properties that help to produce perfect seam.

5. Comfortable during the use of garments

Seaming should be done in that way so that it can produce comfortability

during the use of the garments. It’s one of the important properties of the seam.

Characteristics of a Well-Constructed Seam:

 Smooth and even in appearance on the inside and outside parts. (Properly
adjust machine tension, stitch length, and presser foot pressure to fit the
fabric and thread. Make sure fabric does not crease.)

 Do this as well as with its width all throughout.

 Press open or close according to the type of seam and how it should be used
in the construction process.

 If stitched with thread, the thread should be appropriate to the fabric type
and fiber content. (Thread color should match or slightly darker.)

 Be neat and smooth in appearance, without added bulk;

 Protect the area and prevent the edge from ravelling, stretching, rolling, or
curling; and

 Not be visible from the right side of the garment.
